Discover Kaleytsa through three distinct themes: literary events at Lamar House, the historic Kaleto fortress and Lopushnitsa Waterfall west of the village. This gives you a choice of different focal points: culture, local history and a natural attraction. When planning, it is helpful to decide whether you would like to arrange your visit around an event date, the history of a fortress or a riverside walk.

Literature and traditional ways of life

Lamar House is a literary and cultural venue in Kaleytsa. Literary gatherings are held there in summer, along with readings for the Day of the Bulgarian Enlighteners and an annual celebration of the poet Lamar’s birthday. The summer gatherings and annual birthday celebration mark different occasions, while the readings are tied to the Day of the Bulgarian Enlighteners. If you would like to plan your trip around one of the events, check the specific date in advance.

Traditional ways of life in Kaleytsa also included pottery, woodworking and leatherworking, trade, and livestock raising. This combination of crafts, exchange and animal husbandry broadens the picture beyond literary events to include earlier livelihoods. The terms cover different areas: pottery and working with wood and leather represent crafts, trade represents exchange, and livestock raising is a form of animal husbandry. For those interested in cultural history, this is a second way to explore the village’s past, not tied to a single event date.

Kaleto Fortress

The settlement of Kaleto and its fortress lie about two kilometres from Kaleytsa. Local historical interpretation links the site to the protection of the route through today’s Troyan Pass and to the local Thracian population. Its use is dated to the first millennium BC. Unlike the literary focus of Lamar House, Kaleto is associated with the historically interpreted defensive role of a fortress.

Lopushnitsa Waterfall

Lopushnitsa Waterfall, also called Skoka, lies about two kilometres west of Kaleytsa. The route continues by car for about two kilometres beyond the village; from there, it takes roughly ten minutes to walk along the river. The waterfall is around ten metres high and has a pool at its foot. Its height and pool describe the destination, while the drive and walk outline the journey in stages. Check local conditions before travelling.

Plan according to your interests

These attractions differ in how they fit into your schedule: a cultural event depends on its specific date, the waterfall has an approximate driving and walking distance, while Kaleto is defined by its historical context rather than an event date.
