Since the beginning of the 20th century, pottery in Gorno Trape has developed alongside traditional livestock farming and fruit growing. Together with the Todorova-Mogila Eco Trail and the Chapel of St. Mina the Great Martyr, these themes shape the local character: crafts, landscape and architectural history.

Pottery Tradition, Eco Trail and Chapel

Pottery is not the only part of the village’s history: livestock farming and fruit growing are also longstanding activities. The Todorova-Mogila Eco Trail opened in 2009 and offers views towards the Balkan Mountains. The two themes offer different perspectives: the craft reflects the village’s development, while the eco trail highlights the surrounding mountain landscape.

The construction history of the Chapel of St. Mina the Great Martyr is also precisely dated: work began in 2011, and the chapel was consecrated on November 6, 2014. Its construction was funded entirely by donations. The chapel thus combines a more recent history with a clearly stated religious purpose.

Culture and Crafts in the Wider Troyan Destination

The wider Troyan destination offers additional, distinct cultural attractions. The Museum of Folk Arts and Applied Arts in Troyan displays handcrafted objects, tools, forms, uses and various decorative techniques. It also traces the development of local ceramics from the Ceramic Neolithic to the Bulgarian National Revival and documents the Troyan School of Ceramics. Visits to a pottery workshop and demonstrations of icon painting and woodcarving round out the experience; check availability before your trip.

Another way to explore crafts can be found at the National Exhibition of Arts and Crafts in Oreshak. It displays folk art objects made by recognized masters from all the ethnographic regions of Bulgaria. Visitors can try regional crafts such as pottery, woodcarving, pyrography and weaving; dates may change. The two venues therefore have different focuses: the museum in Troyan combines collections and ceramic history with demonstrations, while the center in Oreshak also invites visitors to try the crafts themselves.

The Troyan Monastery of the Dormition of the Mother of God is near Oreshak, on the banks of the Cherni Osam River. It is considered the largest monastery in the Balkan Mountains and Bulgaria’s third-largest spiritual center. The monastery church contains frescoes by the artist Zahari Zograf, dating from the Bulgarian National Revival. Sostra offers a different glimpse into history: the road station was the sixth on the Via Trayana, which connected Lower Moesia with Thrace; the ancient road runs through Troyan Municipality.

Landscape, Trails and Regional Cuisine

As a geographical point of reference for the wider Troyan destination, about 80 percent of the municipality lies in the Osam River basin. The municipality also extends into the basins of the Yantra and Vit rivers. The area’s natural features also include the Steneto Biosphere Reserve, which lies within Troyan Municipality and is part of Central Balkan National Park.

Natural attractions in the Steneto Reserve that visitors can access include the Raychova Dupka, Ptichata Dupka and Kumanitsa caves, the Markova Dupka rock arch, and the waterfalls at Cher nokozhi and Konski Dol. Access may be restricted in some parts of the reserve; check the current park regulations before visiting. The Natural History Museum in Cherni Osam, meanwhile, focuses on the region’s wildlife and natural attractions in the Balkan Mountains and nearby Central Balkan National Park. Its collection comprises more than 700 exhibits and features over 25 species of taxidermied mammals.

The wider Troyan destination also offers several hiking options. Several trails lead from Chiflik into Central Balkan National Park and the Kozya Stena Reserve. One specifically described route follows a 3.5-kilometer asphalt road from Chiflik to the Haydushka Pesenn hut, then continues on a marked hiking trail to the Kozya Stena hut, a hike of 2 hours and 30 minutes. In winter, there are avalanche-prone areas along the route; check current conditions before setting out.

The regional cultural calendar includes the annual “Chukan Bob s Kopriva i Horo se Izviva” festival in Cherni Osam. It combines a dish of beans and nettles with music and dancing. Exact dates and the program may change, so it is worth checking the latest information before your trip.
