Shipkovo brings together mineral water, ceramic crafts and a high-altitude destination for a varied stay. When planning, it is worth keeping the landmarks distinct: the Shipkovski Mineral Baths lie west of the village, while the described walking trail to the rock chapel starts at Vassilyov Hut. There is also a church with preserved furnishings and a seasonal connection to raspberries. This lets you focus on the thermal area, local culture or the chapel trail.
Location and Mineral Baths
Shipkovo lies on the eastern slopes of the Vassilyovska Mountains. The village stretches along the valleys of the Malka and Golyama rivers, which join to form the Razhdavets. Road III-358 connects Shipkovo with Troyan; check current road conditions before travelling. The Shipkovski Mineral Baths are located two kilometres west of Shipkovo. The baths are therefore a separate landmark from the village itself. The mountain slopes and river valleys, as well as the thermal area, shape the stay.
The mineral springs and boreholes have water temperatures of between 18 and 35 °C. The facility was officially designated a resort in 1946. There are several outdoor pools at the resort, including pools with warm mineral water. As the operation of facilities can change, check before your trip whether the outdoor pools are currently open. A fountain with four outlets supplies four types of water. If its condition is important for your visit, ask locally.
Church and Ceramics
The Church of the Ascension of Christ in Shipkovo is designated a cultural monument of local significance. It was consecrated in 1858 and preserves an authentic iconostasis and icons. Visits are possible by prior arrangement through the Shipkovo mayor's office; confirm the visiting arrangements with them in advance. Several workshops in Shipkovo produce souvenir and household ceramics. Preserved religious heritage and ceramic items for keepsakes and everyday use are thus found side by side.
Rock Chapel at 1,300 Metres
The Rock Chapel of St. Peter and St. Paul stands within Shipkovo's territory at an altitude of 1,300 metres. For orientation, the location and the start of the trail should be considered separately: the marked path starts at Vassilyov Hut. A rope handrail runs along the trail, which leads from the hut to the chapel in about 15 to 20 minutes on foot. A visit is possible when there is no ice or snow; check seasonal trail conditions before setting off.
Raspberries in Midsummer
The municipality's largest raspberry plantations lie about eight kilometres from Shipkovo. Raspberry growing is considered a traditional source of local livelihood; ripe raspberries can be enjoyed in midsummer. If you want to include this culinary experience in your travel plans, midsummer is the time to aim for. At the chapel, by contrast, the key condition is a trail free of ice and snow. Raspberries and the chapel trail thus provide two different seasonal reference points: a fruit season and access that depends on trail conditions.
