Chiflik brings together two distinct attractions: mineral water and spa facilities on the one hand, and routes through the mountain landscape on the other. Hot mineral springs reach temperatures of up to 55 °C; routes from Chiflik also lead into Central Balkan National Park and the adjacent Kozya Stena Reserve. When planning your stay, it helps to treat swimming days and more demanding hikes as separate activities rather than trying to fit both into a tight daily schedule.

Mineral Water and Spa Facilities

Chiflik’s facilities include hot mineral springs reaching temperatures of up to 55 °C, an Olympic-sized outdoor pool, indoor and outdoor mineral water pools, and spa treatments. These offer a range of options: swimming in the large outdoor pool, mineral water pools indoors or outdoors, and treatments at the spa. If you are deciding between a day of swimming and an excursion into the mountains when planning your trip, you can make water and spa facilities a focus in their own right.

Forest Reserve and Landscape

Chiflik lies on the upper reaches of the Beli Osam. Routes from there lead into Central Balkan National Park and the adjacent Kozya Stena Reserve, where edelweiss still grows. Kozya Stena covers 904 hectares and was established in 1987 to protect endangered edelweiss and old beech-fir forests.

Around 40 plant species are listed there as rare or endangered. About 68 bird species breed in the reserve, including rare birds of prey. It is also an important migration route for wild goats. An excursion into the mountain landscape can therefore also offer a chance to see some of the protected area’s distinctive plant and animal species.

Trails of Varying Difficulty

The 3.5-kilometre route from Chiflik to Haydushka Pesen Hut follows an asphalt road and can be travelled on foot, by bicycle or by car. A marked trail leads from Haydushka Pesen Hut to Kozya Stena Hut. This hike is listed as taking 2 hours 30 minutes; it crosses steep terrain and involves a significant elevation gain. This makes for a clear distinction when planning: the paved route allows for several modes of transport, while the marked trail is defined by its duration, steepness and elevation gain.

Passage through the reserve is permitted only on foot, along marked trails. Check the route and surface conditions locally before setting out. For a mountain hike, prepare for the season and check current mountain conditions; also look for the latest information on access rules in the protected area.

History and Accommodation in Chiflik

Chiflik is part of Stara Planina, a Bulgarian balneological and spa destination known as “The Power of the Balkan.” Pottery and man-made burial mounds are considered evidence that a Thracian settlement may have existed in Chiflik. Historically, carriers from Chiflik transported Trojan pottery, wooden objects, woven carpets and blankets as far as the Aegean, Thrace and the Danube Plain.

A municipal overview, updated on 8 November 2023, lists guesthouses and hotels of various categories in Chiflik. When choosing, you can consider whether mineral water and spa facilities or routes through the mountain landscape will be the focus of your stay.
