Röthis combines a long tradition of winegrowing with striking examples of local and architectural history. Travelers who appreciate culture and local connections to wine can choose from several specific themes: the 1674 Torkelbaum, two GoTrails with different focuses, and buildings from various periods. This makes it easy to plan your stay around your interests—from winegrowing and technical history to architecture.

Winegrowing and the Torkelbaum

Winegrowing has been practiced continuously in Röthis since the town was first mentioned in historical records. Local winegrowers cultivate around two hectares of vineyards. The Torkelbaum (press beam) dates from 1674 and is one of Austria’s oldest surviving tree presses. Information panels beside the Torkelbaum explain its former function. The town’s connection to wine therefore spans both ongoing cultivation and historic pressing technology: the tradition is present both as a theme of the community and in a surviving piece of technical heritage.

Two GoTrails with different focuses

The GoTrail “Rautina and the Hunt for the Blue Grape” passes the centuries-old Torkelbaum and the Röthis vineyards. It is about four kilometers long, has 21 stops and takes approximately two to two and a half hours. “Floriani Red and the Röthis Fire Brigade” offers a different focus: this GoTrail takes the form of a hydrant rally, is about three kilometers long and has 25 stops; it takes approximately one to one and a half hours.

According to these estimates, the Rautina tour is longer and takes more time, while Floriani Red has four more stops. So the number of stops is not the only factor to consider: one route passes vineyards and the Torkelbaum, while the other focuses on the fire brigade and has a shorter estimated duration. When planning, it is worth weighing the theme, distance and time required together. Route details may change; check the latest information before setting out.

Architectural heritage and local history

Röthner Schlössle was probably built in the 16th century by the Litscher family, a patrician family from Feldkirch. A painted sundial on its south side is dated 1676. Röthis’s old schoolhouse dates from 1908 and is a typical primary school building from the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. The sundial and the schoolhouse thus offer different points of reference for exploring the town’s architectural history.

The music center by Cukrowicz Nachbaur Architekten is an exemplary work of Vorarlberg architecture; a café is located on the ground floor. The Catholic parish church of St. Martin is one of the important buildings in Röthis. The historic center lies southwest of the listed parish church. The historic center is also home to a wine shop in a more than 200-year-old farmhouse; it occupies the ground floor and cellar.

Another activity option is the fitness trail in the Ganta-Loresch woodland. The woodland lies within the municipalities of Weiler and Röthis. This means sports activities complement the town’s wine-related and architectural themes.
