Rankweil brings together several distinct themes to explore: Roman history, pilgrimage, water as a former energy source, and trails through forests and countryside. For planning, it helps to treat these as separate options rather than combining them into a fixed itinerary. Depending on your interests, you can prioritize cultural sites, a hike to a viewpoint, and nature experiences involving water and native plants.

Roman times and archaeological sites

The open-air Roman Villa Museum features three buildings from a Roman estate. The estate was inhabited from the 1st to the 5th century AD, giving the site a clear archaeological connection. The excavations at Bresner Weitried are also part of Rankweil’s archaeological heritage: visits to the site cover the excavations carried out there since the 1950s. The Roman estate and the history of the excavations thus offer different insights into the area’s past.

Basilica and pilgrimage tradition

Rankweil Basilica has been a pilgrimage destination for many centuries. It is still home to the legendary Silver Cross and lies on the Austrian Way of St. James. Its pilgrimage tradition, a named cultural treasure, and its connection to a pilgrimage route give this cultural theme a distinctive character. Taken together, these features show different sides of Rankweil’s religious history.

Cultural trail and timber rafting

Rankweil’s cultural trail has 19 stations in total. Its multi-stop format offers a different focus from visiting a single cultural site and provides its own way to explore the area’s themes. Along the Trift Experience Trail by the Frutz, you can discover how water was once used as a source of energy. Separate from this is Rankweil’s Trift site, Austria’s only surviving “wild timber-rafting site.”

Hiking trails, forests and views

The Hoher Sattel tour is 13 kilometers long and leads through woodland to a viewpoint above Altenstadt. From there, you can see across the Rhine Valley and the Swiss mountains. The stated distance provides a clear framework for planning your day, while the described viewpoint makes the destination specific. The Frutz floodplain forests can be reached via two different hiking and walking trails. This lets you choose between a tour with a stated distance and viewpoint destination, and two trails into the Frutz floodplain forests. A suggested hiking route through Rankweil’s shady forests runs mostly in the shade and features interesting places and views along the way. Trail conditions can vary depending on the season.

Water and native plants

At Schafplatz, the local recreation area has a small stream and a water playground. Children and parents can also learn about native trees and shrubs on a forest nature trail. The focus here is on the stream, water playground and nature learning—a different theme from a hike to a viewpoint. The Paspels Lakes offer another highlight: their clean groundwater lies in a gravel basin and is used for fishing and swimming.
