Frastanz combines marked hiking trails with swimming facilities, museums and a historical connection dating back to 1499. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between the different highlights: some activities focus on the landscape and route, while others centre on water or collections. This lets you tailor your stay to what interests you most locally.
Hiking and Cycling
Frastanz is the starting point for 87 kilometres of marked hiking trails. Within this network, the routes differ in their specific points of interest. The hike from Amerlugalpe to Feldkircher HĂĽtte offers views of the four-country region of Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria and Germany. The hike through the Saminatal follows the Samina. On the Drei-Schwestern-Steig, distinctive features include wire cables used as handrails and two iron ladders over larger rock steps. To choose a route, you can compare the descriptions by their focus: the hut hike centres on views across the four countries, the Saminatal on the river, and the Drei-Schwestern-Steig on its built-in route features.
A specific section is also described for cycling: the regional cycle route between Vorderland and Walgau includes an approximately 880-metre section along the Ill towards Frastanz. The distance refers to the section along the Ill, not to the entire regional cycle route. So, alongside the marked hiking network, you also have the route of a particular section of a cycle route and its approximate length as a guide.
Swimming in Frastanz
The Untere Au natural swimming area includes a 14,000-square-metre bathing lake. The facilities also include a dedicated children's area and a sandy beach for building sandcastles. The Felsenau swimming pool has a different distinguishing feature: it is the oldest surviving swimming pool in Vorarlberg. The two places therefore offer different highlights: Untere Au is defined by its water area and the two designated areas; Felsenau is the oldest surviving swimming pool in Vorarlberg.
Museums and Local History
The Vorarlberg Museum World presents its collections in the premises of the former Ganahl textile works, now the Energiefabrik on the Samina, in Frastanz. Its former use as a textile works gives the museum site a distinct connection to industrial history. The Frastanz Tobacco Museum houses a collection of pipes, snuff boxes and other smoking accessories gathered from Frastanz households. The two places can therefore be distinguished by their themes: the former textile site on the one hand, and a collection of objects of local origin on the other.
The Battle of Frastanz took place on 20 April 1499 at Letze and in the Ried. The specific date and the two locations give local history a distinct focus, different from that of the museum collections. You can also discover Frastanz through the history of its events.
