A trip to Meiningen offers different focal points, from architectural history to natural habitats. Two hiking trails add to the opportunities for outdoor activities. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can consider whether you would like to focus your stay more on cultural history, nature or hiking trails.

Churches, Houses and Their Architectural History

The parish of St. Agatha includes a chapel built in 1477. In 1724, an extension with a gallery enlarged the chapel into a church. The church tower was built in 1823 by Alois Weiss from Rankweil and master carpenter Josef Allgäuer from Gisingen. The parish’s architectural history thus spans several centuries and includes a chapel, an extension and a tower.

Siebers Hus also brings together different periods. The original Rhine Valley house dates from the 17th century, while its interiors reflect the period around 1900. The age of the house and its interior design therefore point to different eras. The rectory is listed as a historic monument because of its architectural uniqueness. The customs house, also known as Dogana, was built in the 1820s and served as the customs building for the k.k. secondary customs office.

Wet Meadows, Shallow Waters and Floodplain Forest

The habitats in Meiningen differ in both size and vegetation. Petzlern covers 9.7 hectares of extensive wet meadows of the Central European and tall purple moor-grass meadow types. Individual trees and groves structure the area. Oberried is smaller, at 3.1 hectares, and consists of three isolated wetland sections. There, purple moor-grass meadows, some of them very rich in species, vary over short distances depending on the site.

Altenau covers 2.8 hectares and comprises six isolated litter-meadow areas along the western edge of the settlement. Its species-rich purple moor-grass meadows contain good populations of several highly threatened species. A different landscape type characterises the 3.1-hectare Meiningen clay pit: the former extraction site now comprises extensive shallow waters, broad reed beds and a surrounding belt of trees. The Oberau habitat, in turn, extends across 57.5 hectares of floodplain forest within the flood embankments of the Ill and Rhine, from Altenau to the border with Feldkirch. These examples range from litter meadows and purple moor-grass meadows to shallow waters and floodplain forest.

Two Hiking Trails with Different Profiles

The “From Lake to Lake – Meiningen–Paspels–Rüttenen” trail is marked throughout with yellow and white hiking trail signs. The cross-border Three-Country Trail “Movement – Encounter” is a circular route established through cooperation between the towns and municipalities of Altstätten, Feldkirch, Meiningen, Ruggell, Rüthi and Sennwald. It is signposted as a cultural trail and follows existing routes with sections of asphalt, gravel and meadow path. Comparing the two trails, their distinguishing features include the continuous yellow-and-white markings, the cultural trail profile and the different path surfaces. When planning your activities, bear in mind that the Three-Country Trail is not described as having the same surface throughout.

Consider Travel and Accommodation

Meiningen is not directly on the main rail and road connections. Local public transport provides continuous connections between the town and the centres of Feldkirch and Rankweil. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, take your planned journey into account when deciding and check the timetable before setting off.
