A 350-million-year-old granite landscape, a swimming lake with 7,500 m² of water and a farmstead that is around 400 years old offer very different ways to explore Rechberg. They are complemented by hiking trails, a viewing tower and the Mühlviertel Nature Park, which extends across Rechberg and three other municipalities. When planning your trip, you can focus on geology and landscape, time by the water or the history of rural culture.

Granite and distinctive rock formations

The Mühlviertel Nature Park covers 1,046 hectares across Rechberg and three other municipalities. In the nature park region around Rechberg, 350-million-year-old Weinsberg granite shapes the landscape. Weathering creates the characteristic rounded granite boulders, balancing rocks, block castles, “stone huts” and individual blocks. These varied forms give the geological landscape its distinctive character.

Elefantenstein is a large granite block near Steinruckerhof on Pammerhöhe. Schwammerling is an impressive rock formation resembling an oversized mushroom. It displays the characteristic features of a balancing rock formed by spheroidal weathering. These two rock formations offer different ways to discover the area’s distinctive rock shapes.

Hiking trails and views

Rechberg has an extensive network of hiking trails leading to scenic spots in its well-maintained cultural landscape. One specific route is the Schwammerling trail: this easy hike is 4.0 kilometres long and starts and ends at Rechberg village square. Check local conditions before setting out.

For far-reaching views, visit the Karl Weichselbaumer viewing tower. Its 20-metre-high wooden structure stands on a six-metre-high stone plateau. Its height and construction make the tower a distinctive destination among Rechberg’s landmarks: it clearly differs from the natural granite formations and offers a unique perspective on the landscape.

Rechberg Swimming Lake

The Rechberg Swimming Lake area covers 15,000 m², of which 7,500 m² is water. You can ride pedal boats and surf bikes on the lake; there is also a beach volleyball court with fine sand. The site therefore combines water sports with the opportunity to play beach volleyball.

Pedal boats and surf bikes may be available seasonally. If you plan to take part in either activity, check what is on offer for the season before you arrive. This will help you plan around the activities available during your visit.

Großdöllnerhof and the history of rural culture

The Großdöllnerhof open-air museum is a Mühlviertel three-sided farmstead dating back around 400 years, adapted for use as a farming museum and event venue. A three-sided farmstead is a farm complex with buildings on three sides. Großdöllnerhof thus combines its historic farm layout with its later use as a museum and event venue.

The exhibition “Folk Medicine and Superstition” is on display at the open-air museum. It explores centuries-old folk medicine practices and rituals associated with healers, folk practitioners and doctors. As exhibitions may change, check in advance which topics are currently on display.

Guided museum tours are available for groups of 12 or more by prior arrangement. If you plan to take a tour, arrange the date in advance; booking terms may change. Großdöllnerhof is therefore a distinct focus for cultural history alongside Rechberg’s geological and landscape attractions.
