A distinctive landscape feature of Stillensteinklamm is the stream, which disappears underground beneath the Steinerne Stube for a stretch of around 300 metres. There are also hiking trails and historic buildings, so landscape and culture offer different themes to consider when planning your trip.
Hiking and Landscape
Stillensteinklamm has been awarded the Upper Austrian Hiking Quality Seal. At the entrance, granite boulders, small waterfalls and cascades shape the landscape. The visible interplay of rock and water sits alongside the stream’s underground course, giving the gorge several distinct landscape features.
The Burg Werfenstein hiking trail is a 5.7-kilometre circular route starting and ending at GieĂźenbachmĂĽhle in Sankt Nikola on the Danube. Both the length and the shared starting and finishing point are specified for this loop. By contrast, Danube Trail stage 4_G06 is defined by its route from Grein via Sankt Nikola on the Danube to Sarmingstein. This offers two different ways to plan a hike: a loop with a stated distance and a stage linking several places. GieĂźenbachmĂĽhle is now used as an event hall.
Churches and Castle History
The parish church of St Nicholas was founded in 1141 by Beatrix von Clam, together with a hospital for pilgrims and travellers. Its architecture is described as a Baroque-altered Romanesque choir-square church: the term reflects both its Romanesque form and its Baroque remodelling.
Another historical marker in the history of the church is the former branch church of St Mary. Its nave and choir were built around 1400. Werfenstein Castle offers a different historical perspective: it was first mentioned in a document in 1242. In the past, chains were stretched from the castle across the Danube to Wörth Island to stop ships. The chains were therefore part of the castle’s former role on the Danube, not a present-day use.
It is worth distinguishing between the dates of founding, first documentary mention and construction: 1141 marks the founding of the parish church and hospital, 1242 the first documentary mention of the castle, and around 1400 the construction of the nave and choir of the former branch church. This helps put the historical details in context without merging them into a single building history.
Plan Your Stay
If you would like to plan your stay around a hike, you can first choose between the Burg Werfenstein circular trail and the Danube Trail stage. For a cultural and historical focus, the parish church, former branch church and castle each offer a different point of interest: a foundation with a hospital, architectural forms dating to around 1400, and the former control of river traffic. Which of these themes matters most to you can guide your choice of destination, without requiring the places to be combined into a fixed itinerary.
When choosing, check the location and availability of each option against your personal travel plans.
