Luftenberg drops steeply towards the Danube plain on three sides, and its summit is wooded. Ausee Hohenlohe is a 23-hectare swimming lake amid the Danube floodplains. This offers different ways to plan a search for a holiday apartment: scenery, seasonal swimming and water sports, designated trails or local history. First consider which of these will shape your stay in Luftenberg an der Donau.
Scenery and History
The summit of Luftenberg was used as a place of worship and refuge as early as prehistoric times, around 4000 BC. A Bronze Age hoard was discovered there in 1890. The dates refer to different things: 4000 BC is the approximate date of its use, while 1890 is the year the hoard was discovered.
In 1542, the then owner of Luftenberg established a school for the noble sons of the surrounding area in the small castle. Only a few sparse wall remains survive from the once mighty castle. Luftenberg Meierhof is another historic landmark: its core dates from the second half of the 16th century, and the building is a protected monument. The lovingly restored historic Meierhof houses the clubhouse of Golf Club Linz – Luftenberg.
Ausee and Water Sports
Ausee has two water-ski and wakeboard lifts, as well as an aquapark. Pedal boats and SUPs can each be rented for half an hour or a full hour; rental may depend on the season. Swimming is also seasonal. If water sports or time for swimming are key to your trip, take these seasonal conditions into account when planning.
The main access route for motor vehicles and bicycles to Ausee is via the bridge over Mitterwasser. There is also an entrance for cyclists and pedestrians by the VELOKI kiosk, from the Danube side. Check the access information before setting off. For hygiene reasons, the 2025 bathing regulations require guests to shower before each time they enter the lake; check the current rules before your trip.
Hiking, Cycling and Golf
The Danube Heights Hiking Trail is a designated hiking option in Luftenberg, and the Danube Cycle Path is a designated cycling option. The digital town map lists the Auseerunde as a 10-kilometre hiking trail. There are therefore several named options for getting around on foot or by bike, and the Auseerunde also has a specified length.
Numerous gravel and sand habitats along the banks of the Abwinden-Asten Danube power station are ideal for long walks. Golf Club Linz – Luftenberg has an 18-hole course in a scenic setting. Along with the historic sites, this offers a choice of nature, outdoor activities, golf and local history—with no need to make any one of them the focus of your stay.
