More than 100 kilometres of well-marked hiking trails make Bad Kreuzen a destination for a variety of hiking days. There is also Kreuzen Castle, a Kneipp Trail and a spa tradition stretching back more than 175 years. The landscape around the town is characterised by lush green hills, quiet forests and babbling water. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Bad Kreuzen, you can plan your stay around specific interests: the trail length you prefer, the views, or the cultural and Kneipp offerings.
Hiking by Distance and Views
The “Village Loop” is just under five kilometres long. It passes through the Kneipp garden, around the Marienschwestern spa house and continues towards Kreuzen Castle. The “Kreuzner Heartbeat Loop” starts and ends at the castle and is 10.2 kilometres long. This gives you two routes of different lengths to choose from: the Village Loop is the shorter of the two routes with stated distances; for the Heartbeat Loop, both the start and finish at the castle and its length are clearly specified.
Another option is the certified Bad Kreuzen “Highlight Loop”. This circular hike includes, among other things, views of Kreuzen Castle and Wolf Gorge. If you would like to take these two sights into account when choosing a route, you can include the Highlight Loop as a separate option in your plans.
Kreuzen Castle and Wolf Gorge
Since 1987, the keep of Kreuzen Castle has served as an exhibition and cultural centre. The castle is also home to the “Healing Power of Water” exhibition. From the keep’s viewing platform, panoramic views extend across the Danube Valley in the Strudengau and Machland regions to the Alps, from Schneeberg to Traunstein, as well as over the hilly Mühlviertel region. The castle, exhibition and views offer several concrete ways to explore the cultural side of Bad Kreuzen.
Wolf Gorge also combines nature and culture: since 1997, it has been a nature and cultural hiking trail. The steps on the Wolf Gorge route can be slippery in the rain; crossing the gorge in winter is not recommended. If you plan to take this trail, factor the rain warning and winter recommendation into your decision.
Kneipp Trail and Spa Tradition
The Bad Kreuzen Kneipp Trail has a natural Kneipp pool for walking in the water. The trail passes through nature along the Kempbach and features eight motor skills stations with a range of exercises. This means the trail offers both water-treading and a variety of physical activities. The town’s spa tradition dates back more than 175 years; the Marienschwestern spa house is also a landmark on the Village Loop.
Plan Your Journey
Bad Kreuzen can be reached by train via Amstetten or Grein, followed by a bus to the Burg Kreuzen stop. If travelling by train and bus, it is worth checking the timetable for your travel date. This lets you take the final leg of the journey into account when planning your stay, without committing in advance to a route focused on a single attraction.
