With the Naturpark-Mühlviertel Cycle Path, the disc golf course and the wayside shrine at Wansch Cross, Wansch offers several distinct points of interest for a stay. Its varied habitat types add a natural-history dimension. Wansch is also home to a 65 m² holiday apartment offered by the Waser family. The choice of location therefore encompasses cycling, landscape, cultural history and a specific accommodation option.

Cycling and Disc Golf

The first stage of the Naturpark-MĂĽhlviertel Cycle Path is numbered 977 and is 37.53 kilometres long. It heads south through the shady KefermĂĽhlbach Valley and reaches the village of Wansch. In Wansch, a disc golf course on this stage offers a fun leisure activity. The route distance and the course answer different planning questions: the 37.53 kilometres describe the cycling section, while disc golf is an activity in the village. Wansch can therefore be considered both a stage destination and a place with its own leisure activity. The kilometre figure measures distance, not travel time; allow for your own time budget when planning. As route conditions can change seasonally, check current conditions before setting out.

Landscape Habitats

A nature park survey involving fieldwork in 2020 describes a sparse stand in Wansch on a shallow-soil meadow ridge that transitions into gravel grassland. It also records a species-rich wood-sedge meadow as habitat FNR 216, as well as wet-meadow complexes in narrow depressions along tributaries of the Kleine Naarn. These descriptions distinguish different site characteristics: the meadow ridge identifies a landform, the wood-sedge meadow a species-rich stand, and the depressions their connection to moisture and tributaries. The term “shallow-soil” draws attention to the limited soil depth of the meadow ridge; the designation FNR 216 adds a specific classification to the wood-sedge meadow type. These details describe the habitat, landform and location in more detail, helping to characterise the landscape.

Wayside Shrine at Wansch Cross

In 1983, the Langeder family erected a wayside shrine at Wansch Cross in place of the former cross. The shrine contains a reverse-glass painting depicting Saint Leonard. A stop is made there for the “cross prayers” on the Feast of the Visitation of Mary on 2 July. The details refer to different points in time: 1983 dates the construction, while 2 July is associated with the religious custom. The image and the history of the shrine also complement each other: the reverse-glass painting identifies the saint depicted, while the construction history explains the replacement of the former cross. At Wansch Cross, a specific image and a religious practice are thus brought together.
