Schloss Schwertberg, castle ruins, a church and special collections offer different ways to explore Schwertberg’s history. Outdoors, there are hiking trails, the recreation meadow by the Aist and Weltstein. You can shape your stay around culture, outdoor activities or both, and keep your own priorities in mind when looking for accommodation.

Castle and castle ruins: two historic sites

Schloss Schwertberg was first mentioned in a document in 1327. It was probably built as early as the second half of the 13th century on a rocky outcrop on the right bank of the Aist. The original core essentially comprised the area occupied by the present-day castle, with its tower, courtyard and residential buildings. The information distinguishes between the presumed construction period and the first documentary mention. The castle can be viewed from the outside; check whether visits are possible before travelling.

Windegg Castle Ruins have a different history: canons of Regensburg Cathedral built them in the 12th century, and they were first mentioned in a document in 1208. The ruins can be reached on foot via the Schwertberg circular hiking trail. If you are interested in historic buildings, you can visit the castle and the ruins as two distinct sites without reducing their histories to the same period.

Cultural centre, church and local history

The Lichtenwagner Cultural Centre displays archaeological finds from restoration work at Windegg Castle Ruins. It also houses a horn-turning museum and a collection of door locks. The cultural centre can be viewed from the outside; it is open during public events or exhibitions. If you would like to see the collections inside, check the dates in advance. Next to the cultural centre, the Kneipp facility can be used free of charge all year round; check that it is available before your visit.

The parish church also brings together several specific details: its 37-metre-high tower was built around 1500 and has a wedge-shaped roof. The church contains the ThĂĽrheimer family crypt, built in 1777. Another local-history site is the market fountain, which dates from 1666. These buildings and dates offer different points of interest, from the architecture of the church tower to the history of a family crypt and a fountain.

The Aiser open-air theatre is also part of the area’s cultural history. It was founded in May 1965 as the Schwertberg amateur theatre group. This takes the story beyond older architectural history to a more recent cultural foundation.

Hiking, cycling and scenery

At 478 metres, Weltstein is Schwertberg’s highest point. Below it stands Schönböck Chapel, also known as Lina Chapel. The recreation meadow by the Aist has children’s play equipment, a beach volleyball court and a large sunbathing lawn. Its facilities offer various ways to spend time outdoors, without requiring a set programme.

The recreation meadow car park is an important starting point for hikes: all Schwertberg hiking trails begin there. Free parking is available at the car park; check the conditions before travelling. Another option is cycling the R30 Aist-Naarntal Cycle Route, which is 48 kilometres long in total. The hiking trails and cycle route offer different ways to explore the surrounding area on foot or by bike.

Getting there and finding accommodation

Schwertberg lies north of the B3 Danube Road, between Mauthausen and Perg. Its location on the road helps you find your way when travelling there. When looking for a hotel in Schwertberg, you can then consider which themes you would like to shape your stay: historic sites, hiking or time by the Aist. The sights and activities mentioned provide specific options without prescribing a set itinerary.
