A distinctive feature of Linz-Land is its quadrangle farmsteads, which are considered a hallmark of the region. The development of one such farm complex can be traced particularly clearly at Sumerauerhof: first mentioned in documents around 1200, it developed into the enclosed quadrangle farmstead seen today in the 17th century. Its early mention and subsequent architectural development give the site a long historical perspective.

Sumerauerhof is home to endangered livestock breeds, extensive orchards with old local fruit varieties, a farmhouse garden, a nature playground and a garden restaurant. Alongside the architecture, livestock, fruit growing and garden culture are also important themes. Visitors interested in rural cultural heritage will encounter several different facets here, from the enclosed farmstead to the orchards.

History between Enns and Ansfelden

In Enns, substantial sections of the town wall and six defensive towers are still visible. The town tower stands almost 60 metres tall and adds a distinctive feature to the townscape. A town discovery trail also explores the history of the town: “From Roman Camp to Trading Town” includes a geology park. The route thus combines a historical theme with a hands-on introduction to geology.

Another trace of Roman times leads to the Basilica of St. Laurenz. It stands above the remains of a Roman house, which can be viewed on guided tours beneath the basilica. Viewing the remains is therefore only possible as part of a guided tour.

The Anton Bruckner Museum in Ansfelden is housed in the composer’s birthplace, which has been preserved in its original condition. Specific visiting hours apply in 2026: from 4 April to 31 October, the museum is open on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Guided tours are available by arrangement. If you are planning a visit, the days and times listed will help you plan.

Culture and trails around Wilhering

Wilhering Abbey, with its Rococo church, is a distinctive cultural destination. St. Florian Abbey is also among the cultural attractions of Linz-Land. Wilhering is also home to the permanent exhibition “Collection Prof. Fritz Fröhlich”; paintings are displayed in the old abbey brewery. These places and offerings each have a different focus: sacred architecture on the one hand, and an exhibition featuring paintings on the other.

The Prinzensteig trail also runs from Wilhering to Linz through the Kürnbergerwald, which offers a variety of hiking opportunities. The Passau-to-Vienna cycle route also follows the Danube in the Wilhering area. A fish education trail runs alongside the cycle path by the Ottensheim–Wilhering power station. This offers a range of ways to explore the area: a hiking route through the forest, the Danube as a reference point for the cycle route, and an educational trail beside the cycle path.

Trails, views and practical information

Linz-Land has a dense network of regional hiking, running and cycling trails; the Donausteig trail also passes through the region. The MĂĽhlsteinweg offers specific information on distance and duration: it is 8.55 kilometres long and takes about 2.8 hours. From the trail, you can see the Enns town tower and the MĂĽhlviertel. When planning, you can therefore take into account an approximate duration, a specific route length and named viewpoints.

For travel by bus, a connection to St. Florian Abbey is listed: route 410 connects Linz Hbf (bus terminal) with St. Florian Stift. Check the current timetable before travelling. Another aspect of the region’s leisure activities is the outdoor pool at the Traun bathing centre. At Trauner Au, it has an 11,000 m² sunbathing area overlooking Lake Oedt. The range of possible outings thus extends from historic buildings and guided tours to trails, cycling and swimming.
