A document from KremsmĂĽnster Abbey mentions Eggendorf Castle for the first time in 1224. The present-day castle was built by Florian Ostermayer in 1580. These dates point to two different moments in its history: its first mention and the construction of the present-day castle. This makes it possible to place the building in its historical context without conflating its early mention with the creation of the present-day structure.
Eggendorf Castle Chapel and Church
The castle chapel attached to Eggendorf Castle served as the parish church from 1784 to 1912. Eggendorf Church was built from 1911 to 1913 and consecrated by Bishop Rudigier on 15 June 1913. The start of construction therefore overlaps with the final years in which the chapel served as the parish church. The two buildings can be understood through their different functions and the sequence of events.
The tower of Eggendorf Church is 38 metres high. The high altar painting depicts the Assumption of Mary, was painted by Martin Johann Schmidt and bears the date 1799. Alongside the building dates and consecration, the church also offers a specific connection to art. The tower height and construction dates describe the building, while the subject and artist’s name identify details of the high altar.
Weitersdorf Castle and Hueb Water Castle
Weitersdorf Castle was a former moated castle in Eggendorf im Traunkreis. It was first mentioned in 1458 or 1460 as a fief held by Sigmund Wolkauf. Its first mention came later than that of Eggendorf Castle; the feudal relationship also forms part of Weitersdorf’s historical context.
The focus at Hueb Water Castle is on its architectural form and earlier history: it is a simple, two-storey, hook-shaped building and the remains of a noble residence. As late as the end of the 17th century, this residence stood on an island in a pond that is still partly preserved. The old Volkerstorfer fief associated with Hueb Water Castle had been in the possession of the Mühlwanger family since the middle of the 14th century. The estate belonging to the water castle operated as an inn from 1961 to 1991. Hueb therefore brings together different periods: the history of the fief’s ownership, the historical location of the noble residence and the later use as an inn.
