The Augustinian Canons’ Abbey, Sumerauerhof and the Upper Austrian Fire Brigade Museum offer different cultural perspectives in Sankt Florian: Baroque and Anton Bruckner, the living conditions of farming families at the end of the 19th century, and the development of the fire service. Two hiking trails add a range of destinations to this selection. When looking for a hotel in Sankt Florian, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on: the history of the abbey, historic farm culture, the history of the fire service or a walking route.

Baroque and Bruckner at the Abbey

The Augustinian Canons’ Abbey of St. Florian is regarded as a treasure of Austrian Baroque. Its library contains more than 150,000 volumes. Anton Bruckner’s connection to the abbey can be seen in two different places: his sarcophagus is in the crypt, and the Bruckner Organ is in the abbey basilica. The library, crypt and basilica are therefore all part of the same abbey theme, but each offers a different perspective. Group and private tours of the Augustinian Canons’ Abbey can be booked year-round by prior arrangement. If you are planning a guided tour of the abbey, be sure to arrange it in advance.

Rural Farm History

Sumerauerhof is one of the largest four-sided farmsteads in Upper Austria’s central region. Many areas have been preserved in their original condition, offering insight into the living conditions of prosperous farming families in the Florian region at the end of the 19th century. This historical perspective focuses on a specific way of life. The farm also has extensive meadows with old local fruit varieties, a spacious farmhouse garden and a nature playground. Sumerauerhof also has a petting zoo with rare animal species. Those particularly interested in rural living conditions will find a different perspective on local history here than at a museum devoted to the development of the fire service.

The History of the Fire Service as a Distinct Focus

The Upper Austrian Fire Brigade Museum St. Florian is located in the Baroque estate buildings of the Augustinian Canons’ Abbey of St. Florian. It presents more than 15,000 exhibits across 2,500 m² of exhibition space and traces the development of the fire service as both a technical and a social institution. Its subject therefore differs from that of Sumerauerhof: the focus there is on rural living conditions and farm history, while here it is on the development of the fire service. This comparison can help you choose between two different historical subjects.

Hiking Trails with Different Destinations

The well-marked Mühlsteinweg follows the cemetery wall and passes the imposing towers of the abbey basilica before climbing to the Ölberg Chapel. From there, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the foothills of the Alps. The approximately 9 km-long Symphoniewanderweg leads from Ansfelden to Sankt Florian. Ansfelden is Anton Bruckner’s birthplace; Sankt Florian was one of the places where he worked and is his burial place. The route description was published in 2024. Check current trail conditions before setting out. The route descriptions have different focuses: the chapel and the view are key destinations on the Mühlsteinweg, while the Symphoniewanderweg links Bruckner’s birthplace with a place where he worked and his burial place.
