The parish church of St Martin, Roman stones and gently rolling countryside give Kematen an der Krems a range of different highlights for a stay. The town’s history can be combined with agricultural themes and views of forests, meadows and farmland. Kematen is located in the Traunviertel, where the foothills of the Alpine Foreland come into view.
Church and Roman traces
The three-aisled parish church of St Martin is at the heart of Kematen an der Krems. The main part of the central nave is thought to have been built or completed around 1490. The church also features Baroque works by Johann Georg Schwanthaler. Its architectural history and art thus offer different historical highlights in a central location.
The Roman stones can also be found at specific locations: one is in the municipal office, while two others can be seen in the parish church. The stones discovered in Kematen are considered evidence that the area was inhabited in ancient times by Illyrians, Celts and Romans. Another historical point concerns the Roman road: it ran through the Kematen area from Lorch to Bruck an der Mur.
Countryside and leisure
Forests, meadows and farmland alternate across the gently rolling landscape of Kematen. To the northwest, the Schacherwald extends into the municipal area and stretches as far as Ried im Traunkreis. The historic town centre and the northwestern landscape thus offer different perspectives on the area.
The Funcourt at the sports ground offers opportunities for football, street soccer and basketball. It also has hammocks and balance elements; in summer, a sun sail provides a shaded area. Ball games, balancing and the other features offer a range of leisure activities at the same Funcourt.
At Gut Achleiten, the “School on the Farm” experience is aimed at organised groups of children. They can discover and explore fields, the barn, cows and chickens. The Achleiten equestrian centre is another sports facility in Kematen. If you plan to take part in activities there, check what is currently available in advance.
Agriculture and shopping
Sunflower oil production is also part of the area’s agricultural activity: the sunflowers grow in the immediate vicinity of Gut Achleiten, where they are used to produce cold-pressed sunflower oil. A farm shop with its own product range is the Gassner farm shop, run by the Obermayr family at Burg 18. It sells bread, pastries, eggs, fruit spreads, syrup, pasta, spirits and liqueur. Check the opening hours before visiting.
Plan your journey by bike and train
The Kematen-Piberbach S4 station is located directly on the Kremstal cycle path. Bikes can be taken on regional trains, but not on rail replacement services. If you would like to combine train travel with cycling, check the connection for your travel date and find out whether a replacement service is planned.
