For a cultural trip to Enns, you can explore Roman history, sacred buildings and the different layers of the old town as distinct highlights. Museums, historic buildings and guided tours offer different perspectives, from the city’s development and Roman Lauriacum to the architectural styles in the center. You can plan your stay around whether you are primarily interested in exhibitions, architecture or guided insights into the city’s history.

City History at the Museum and the Castle

Museum 1212 Enns begins its account of the city’s history with the Georgenberg Charter of 1186. The charter granting Enns town rights in 1212 is also part of the historical narrative. These two dates provide an introduction to the city’s development: the museum traces it through to the present day in eight rooms at Ennsegg Castle. Multimedia stations and staged rooms complement the exhibition.

Guided tours of Ennsegg Castle focus on other features of the Renaissance building: its interior, decorated with frescoes and stucco work, the tower and the Baroque castle chapel. This adds architecture and interiors to the picture of the city’s history. Tour dates and booking conditions may change, so check them before your visit.

Roman Lauriacum and Sacred History

The Lauriacum Museum highlights the monumental building inscription of the Lauriacum legionary camp. A two-hour guided tour covers the Roman settlement of Lauriacum and the legio II Italica stationed there. This offers a different historical period and thematic focus from a tour of Enns Old Town.

Traces beneath the Basilica of St. Lawrence also date back to Roman times: the oldest walls uncovered in the excavations are from this period. Visible finds include remnants of frescoes, a votive stone and a relief stone built into the wall, depicting scenes of sacrifice. A guided tour of the basilica provides an overview of more than 1,700 years of religious life.

The parish church of Enns-St. Mary is also located in the old town. This important mendicant church dates from the 14th century and has served as a parish church in Enns since the 16th century. The Classic City Tour lasts 90 minutes and takes you through the old town; one of its stops is St. Mary’s and the Wallsee Chapel. The tour themes can help you choose: the Roman tour lasts two hours, while the classic tour explores the old town. Check current dates and booking conditions in advance.

Tower, Chapel and the Architectural History of the Old Town

The almost 60-meter-high town tower was built by the citizens between 1564 and 1568 as a bell and watchtower. A gallery is reached by climbing more than 157 steps. The former Johanniter Chapel in the Frauen Tower contains wall paintings in a mixed technique from the early 14th century. A pilgrims’ hospice was built in Enns between 1326 and 1338, and the chapel in the Frauen Tower belonged to it.

Different architectural periods meet in the old town: surviving features include Gothic door and window surrounds, Renaissance sgraffito ornaments, Baroque stucco and Gründerzeit friezes. Most of the houses date from the 15th and 16th centuries. By looking at the façades and details as you walk around, you can see these periods side by side without reducing the architectural history to a single style.

The parish church of St. Mary and the chapel in the Frauen Tower also represent different periods of religious history. Historically, Enns lay on the European Way of St. James, which continued west through Switzerland, France and northern Spain to Santiago de Compostela. This historical context describes the route as it ran at the time.

City Experience Trail and Getting There

The Enns City Experience Trail starts at the Basilica of St. Lawrence, passes through the former Roman legionary camp of Lauriacum to the banks of the River Enns, and then follows the riverside promenade into Enns Old Town. The IVV City Experience Trail has more than 25 information stations. The Classic City Tour, by contrast, is a clearly defined format lasting 90 minutes. You can choose between a described route and a guided tour of the old town.

ÖBB and Postbus services stop directly at Enns’s main square, opposite the museum. From Enns station, you can reach the main square via Westbahnstraße, Lorcherstraße and Mauthausnerstraße. Check the timetables before you travel so your plans match the current connections. When choosing accommodation in Enns, you can base your decision on the focus of your stay and plan time for guided tours and your own outings accordingly.
