Ansfelden can be explored through two special themes: Anton Bruckner and the area’s long history of settlement. There are also routes with different focuses—from an archaeological walk to a hike of around nine kilometres towards St. Florian. This lets you plan your stay around culture, exercise or both, without combining the different routes into a single trail.

Bruckner’s birthplace and Ansfelden’s architectural history

The Anton Bruckner Museum is housed in the composer’s birthplace, which has been preserved in its original form. In the town centre, the Anton Bruckner monument stands in front of the ABC events centre, the Anton Bruckner Centrum. It was unveiled in 1924 at a Bruckner memorial service. The ABC itself opened in June 1996 and has since been used as a cultural and events centre, with an extensive year-round cultural programme.

The Ansfelden parish church also tells the story of the area’s architectural and religious history: it is dedicated to St Valentine and is one of the town’s listed buildings. The rectory was completed in 1707. These places offer different points of interest—from the link to Bruckner’s birthplace and the history of the rectory to the church’s dedication. Visitors exploring Ansfelden’s culture can therefore experience them as separate stops rather than reducing them to a single attraction.

Archaeological traces and routes

During the Early Iron Age, the Burgwiese was home to a densely populated, fortified hilltop settlement. Visible ramparts and ditches along the way there indicate that a fortification once stood on the site. Archaeological excavations identify Petersberg and Burgwiese together as important market and settlement sites that have existed since the Stone Age.

The Archaeological Hiking Trail starts at the car park of the Stockinger inn and leads via Petersberg to Burgwiese. You can choose this route for its archaeological destination. The Anton Bruckner Symphony Hiking Trail has a different theme and location: it is around 9 km long and leads from the Anton Bruckner Centrum in Ansfelden to the interior of St. Florian Abbey. When choosing between the two hikes, the early history of settlement on one hand and the Bruckner connection and destination on the other provide clear guidance.

Pilgrimage routes also pass through Ansfelden. The Austrian main route of the Way of St James crosses the town on its southern route from St. Florian towards Hörsching. Ansfelden is also on the third stage of the Benedict Pilgrimage Circular Trail in the Traunviertel region.

Cycling and outdoor activities

Two local routes should be distinguished when navigating by bike. The family-friendly R10 cycle route reaches Ansfelden before the Krems flows into the Traun. The R4 Traun Cycle Path, by contrast, runs directly along the border between Ansfelden and Traun and skirts Ansfelden. These descriptions help you understand the routes’ locations without treating them as a continuous connection to one another.

Other options focus on exercise and agility. Motorikpark Ansfelden offers free training facilities with more than 100 pieces of equipment across over 130 stations. These include a wheelchair course; signs at each station explain how to perform the exercises correctly. Ansfelden outdoor swimming pool offers more than 1,400 m² of water area and a 9,000 m² sunbathing lawn. The archery centre covers 15,000 m² and caters to both beginners and advanced archers.

If you would like to include golf in your plans, Golfclub Stärk Linz.Ansfelden in Ansfelden has a 53-hectare course with 18 holes, a driving range, a putting green and a chipping green. Its size and facilities differ significantly from the activities at Motorikpark: here, the focus is on a golf course with practice areas, while there it is on a course with numerous stations. This lets you choose leisure activities according to your preferred focus, rather than assuming the different options share the same facilities or target group.

Getting here and your stay

Ansfelden can be reached from Linz Central Station by train via Ansfelden and Nettingsdorf stations. Regional bus services operated by the Upper Austrian Transport Association are also available. When planning your trip, you can combine these travel options with the area’s local themes: Bruckner’s birthplace and the ABC offer a cultural connection, while archaeological traces, hikes and cycle routes provide other points of interest. Which options suit your stay depends on whether you are looking for a single cultural stop, a route with a specific destination or outdoor activities.
