Those planning a trip to Leonstein will find a variety of highlights: historic Schmiedleithen, activities in the leisure park and scenic views along the Steyr. When looking for hotels in Leonstein, it helps to decide first which of these themes you want to shape your stay.
Schmiedleithen and the Black Counts
The Schmiedleithen ensemble is the only hammer-lord ensemble in the entire Eisenwurzen region to have been preserved in such a complete form. The historic manor garden at Schmiedleithen covers more than 3,000 m² and includes a rose garden, rock garden, kitchen garden, front garden, blacksmith’s garden and herb spiral. The different garden styles each have their own character and add another cultural highlight to the ensemble.
An exhibition in the Kram building at Schmiedleithen is dedicated to the lives and work of Rudolf, Hermine and Josef Zeitlinger, the last Black Counts of Schmiedleithen. Alongside the ensemble and garden, the stories of these three people are also in focus. The Black Counts Trail offers a different perspective: starting at Leonstein Castle, it follows Rinnerberger Bach into a deeply cut valley with manor houses, blacksmiths’ houses and servants’ quarters. The stream, the valley and these historic building types shape the character of the trail.
Leisure park and trails along the Steyr
Leonstein’s leisure park has an outdoor fitness park with mountain views, a skate park and two beach volleyball courts. The activities vary widely, from exercising on fitness equipment to skating and beach volleyball. The Steyrtal cycle path runs right alongside the leisure park and is used by cyclists, walkers, runners and skaters. Different forms of activity come together here, without everyone needing to take part in the same one.
Views and orientation are also among Leonstein’s distinctive features. At the upper edge of the Steyr Gorge, in Leonstein shortly before or after crossing the main road, a secure viewing platform offers a view into the Steyr Canyon. At the Fürnkranz car park, a wooden pavilion serves as a rest stop and provides information about Kalkalpen National Park and the Steyrtal Museum Railway. The viewing platform looks out over the gorge; the pavilion offers a break and information on two regional topics.
Rinnerberger Waterfall can be reached on foot from the former Waldklause in Pernzell in about an hour. Treat the walking time as a guide: trail conditions may vary, so it is a good idea to check them before setting out.
