Those wishing to combine culture and scenery in Micheldorf in Upper Austria will find a range of options, from the Scythe Museum and historic themed trails to geological features and seasonal tours. The stated walking times and conditions throughout the year are especially helpful when making your choice. This lets you weigh up whether a circular trail, a longer cultural walk or an outing with a seasonal focus is better suited to your stay.

Scythe Craft and Local History

With its authentically preserved buildings and many original objects, the Micheldorf Scythe Museum conveys the everyday life of Caspar and Josepha Zeitlinger, their family, and the workers at the scythe forge. The museum also reflects the workshop’s 500-year history at the Gries, known as the Gradn. The exhibition thus brings together personal stories of everyday life and the history of scythe-making.

If you prefer to explore historical themes on foot, you can plan the Sengstschmiedroas: this is a themed circular walking trail and experience route in Micheldorf that takes about two hours. Information boards along the route explain the history of the scythe forges. Another way to explore local history is to climb Georgenberg. This steep, 594-metre-high hill offers panoramic views and is crowned by a Gothic church dedicated to St George, later remodelled in the Baroque style. Archaeological excavations and finds show that its summit was already inhabited in the second millennium BC.

The Georgiritt is also part of the cultural calendar: it takes place every two years on the Sunday after St George’s Day, 23 April. If you are planning your trip around this date, check the event date in advance.

Compare Walking Times and Trails

Different times are given for two circular walks. The Sengstschmiedroas takes about two hours. The Kulturweg is an easy circular walk with an estimated walking time of three hours and 30 minutes; it starts at the Alpenbad car park. Comparing the two helps with planning your day: allow more walking time for the Kulturweg, while the time given for the Sengstschmiedroas is explicitly approximate.

Another hiking option leads to the Gradnalm. A marked trail runs from the Kremsursprung via the Sattelhald to the alpine pasture and takes about two hours; it is considered not too difficult. The Gradnalm lies at an elevation of around 1,240 metres at the foot of the rugged ridge of the Kremsmauer. The alpine hut is open from 1 May to 31 October; drinks and light snacks are available at weekends. As it is open seasonally, it is advisable to check before setting out.

Geology, Blossoms and Winter Conditions

At Himmelreich Biotope, a walk along the gravelled main path is combined with information about geology. Signs along the path identify marble, gneiss, schist and limestone, as well as fossilised corals and snails from the surrounding area. A display case also provides information about various minerals. The biotope is home to 16 native orchid species and five gentian species. A visit during the orchid bloom in May and June is especially recommended; the flowering period can vary from year to year.

In winter, another activity depends on there being enough snow: an extensive network of cross-country ski trails then stretches from the Kremsursprung through the Krems floodplains, where visitors can cross-country ski and snowshoe. This seasonal condition is crucial when planning. The winter outing and the spring flowering season therefore offer different reasons to visit.

Sport and Relaxation

Micheldorf Leisure Park covers around five hectares. Its facilities include two football pitches, tennis courts, an athletics facility, a running track, skateboarding areas and a four-lane bowling alley. As the facilities may change, it is a good idea to check what is currently available before planning a visit around specific amenities.

Another option is Micheldorf’s sauna complex, which offers a sauna, herbal sauna, steam bath, solarium and massages; the facilities may change. The sauna complex can be reached on the Pyhrnbahn railway, with Micheldorf station as the stop. Check the train connection and current facilities before planning your visit.
