In Haselböckau, the Krems retains a very winding, largely undisturbed course, accompanied by natural marshes and wetlands. There are also hiking trails with named stops and opportunities to observe birdlife. The character of the landscape offers a concrete point of reference when choosing a holiday apartment in Haselböckau: here, the river, meadows and hiking take centre stage.
River Landscape and Nature Reserve
The “Kremsauen” nature reserve in Haselböckau is located within the municipal areas of Schlierbach and Nussbach. An environmental report from 2004 describes it as one of the most ecologically valuable areas. The Krems meanders through this protected area largely undisturbed, accompanied by natural marshes and wetlands. A hydromorphological study from 2008 describes the Haselböckau as having a roughly four-kilometre-long, largely undisturbed and very winding river course.
Along the section of the hike through Haselböckau, the Krems is still unregulated. During spring floods, steep banks repeatedly form on the outer bends. These are the outer sides of the river bends, where you can see how the river’s winding shape relates to its banks.
Hiking Trails and Notable Stops
A well-signposted hiking trail leads from the Wanzbach district past the “1,000-year-old Oak”; a place to sit by the wayside shrine invites you to stop for a peaceful rest. The K10 Culture Trail lists the natural monument as a point of interest halfway along its route in Haselböckau. The oak and the wayside shrine offer different highlights: one is centred on a natural monument, the other on a specific place to rest.
The hike through the meadows and river landscape begins below a farmhouse, in front of the Brandlmayr wooden bridge. From there, a well-maintained gravel path leads for about 50 metres to a fork in the path. There is no formal car park at the starting point, so please bear this in mind when planning your journey.
From a fork in the hiking trail, a spur path about 300 metres long leads towards the Kremstalauen nature reserve. The roughly 50 metres refer to the first section from the start to a fork in the path; the approximately 300 metres refer to the spur path. These figures describe individual sections of the route, not the total hiking distance.
Birdlife in the Meadows and Along the River
A nature guide from 2009 lists dippers and grey wagtails as species that can be observed at a weir along the hiking trail. Grey herons sometimes take flight from the streambed of the Krems or the adjoining meadows; kestrels can often be seen hovering over the meadows in their distinctive flight. The wet meadows provide a habitat for the corncrake, also known as the landrail. Its distinctive call can sometimes be heard as early as the evening.
