In Grünburg, several interests sit side by side: a historic railway, architectural and industrial history, and cycling and hiking trails. These highlights are easy to distinguish when planning your trip. The museum railway is a draw for rail enthusiasts, while church architecture, historic ensembles and riverside trails offer other ways to experience the area.

Travelling on the Steyr Valley Museum Railway

The Steyr Valley Museum Railway is Austria’s oldest steam-powered narrow-gauge railway. It runs for 16.7 kilometres from Steyr local railway station to Grünburg local railway station. In Grünburg, you can also visit a small exhibition on the railway’s history and the railway workshop. The route, exhibition and workshop offer different ways to explore railway history. The railway carries bicycles, pushchairs and wheelchairs free of charge, subject to the available cargo space on the train. If you plan to bring any of these, it is worth checking the current carriage conditions before your journey, as the rules may change.

Church architecture and historic ensembles

The parish church of Grünburg, dedicated to Saint George, has Romanesque origins. The chancel was extended in 1457 and the nave in 1519, giving them their present Gothic form. The church stands on a hill on the left bank of the Steyr, in the cadastral municipality of Obergrünburg. Its Chapel of the Cross contains a Baroque altar in front of a Crucifixion group attributed to an artist from the Schwanthaler family. The building offers a chance to see different periods and decorative details without conflating them into a single construction phase.

Another cultural highlight is Schmiedleithen: it is the only hammer-lord ensemble in the entire Eisenwurzen region to have survived in such a complete state. This distinction refers to how well the ensemble as a whole has been preserved. The circular trail “In the Footsteps of the Black Counts” also brings the area’s history to life through its buildings. The trail starts and ends in Grünburg at Leonstein Castle, then leads from there into the Valley of the Black Counts. Along Rinnerberger Bach, you can discover manor houses as well as smithy and servants’ houses.

Cycling along the Steyr River

The R 8 family cycling trail runs close to the Steyr River. Features along the route include swimming spots, rest areas, activity stops, viewpoints and canyons. The Steyr Valley Cycle Route R 8 is also well suited to families because much of it is fairly flat. So when choosing a route, the surface is not the only consideration: the R 8 combines riverside scenery and a variety of stops with a largely flat profile. A recommended section runs from Grünburg to the Steyr breakthrough and back. Along the way, you can enjoy impressive views into the Steyr Gorge Nature Reserve.

Hiking trails and protected landscapes

There are different ways to explore the area on foot, too. The “Großer und Kleiner Landsberg” route is a summit hike and circular trail with a short climbing section. Terrain and conditions can change, so check the latest conditions before setting out. The Planwiesen area is in Leonstein, within the municipality of Grünburg, and is a nature reserve. It offers a distinct landscape experience alongside the views into the Steyr Gorge from the cycling route section to the Steyr breakthrough.

The route to Rinnerberger Waterfall Gorge follows a marked hiking trail and a footbridge to the waterfall; an iron staircase leads onward into Rinnerberger Gorge. After storms or maintenance work, trail infrastructure may change. In summer, the clear stream is inviting for a paddle and a refreshing dip, although water levels and safe access can vary by season. Another starting point is the L2 Hambaum Trail Leonstein: it begins at a car park just below Hambaum, beside the road. Parking arrangements may change, so check the parking situation before you set out if needed.

More leisure activities

Leonstein leisure park has a climbing cube, a skate park and two beach volleyball courts with panoramic views all around. Alongside cycling and hiking trails, there are also specific leisure activities to choose from in the Leonstein district. These different highlights can help you choose what to explore in Grünburg based on the things that interest you most on your trip.
