Kremsmünster lies in the sheltered valley depression of the Krems River and on the varied slopes of the Alpine foothills. When choosing a place to stay, the town’s features offer two starting points: monastic culture and nature trails. Before searching, you can decide whether the abbey’s history or the trails to scenic viewpoints and natural monuments should shape your stay more strongly.

The Abbey and Local History

Kremsmünster Abbey is one of Austria’s most significant Baroque monastic complexes. The abbey’s art collections are housed on the second floor of the Imperial Hall wing; the monastery library now contains around 230,000 volumes. The Tassilo Chalice, also called the Tassilo-Liutpirc Chalice in more recent research, is the abbey’s most significant art treasure. The library and chalice offer contrasting highlights: an extensive collection on the one hand, and a single particularly prominent art treasure on the other.

Another chapter in the town’s history is the Chapel of St. Mary at Kirchberg. It was built in the 11th century as the parish church of Kremsmünster. The abbey gardens offer a different perspective on the town’s history: records show that exotic Mediterranean plants were cultivated there as early as 1604. The cultural themes thus range from the monastery buildings and their collections to the history of the gardens and the old parish church.

Trails and Landscapes

The Climate Experience Trail on the abbey grounds has 24 stations and is 3 kilometres long. Its format differs from that of trails leading to a named destination. The Tempetal Trail leads to the “Tree in the Middle of the World” viewpoint; from its observation tower, the view extends far across the Northern Limestone Alps. The Wolfgang Trail leads to Wolfgangstein, a natural monument and former quarry.

These two trail destinations each have a different focus: the “Tree in the Middle of the World” is known for its expansive views across the Northern Limestone Alps, while Wolfgangstein is classified as a natural monument and former quarry. Together with the Climate Experience Trail, they offer different landscape highlights to consider when planning: a route with stations, a scenic viewpoint, or a natural monument with its former use as a quarry.

Include Cycling and Rail in Your Plans

The Kremstal Cycle Path R10 passes by Kremsmünster. The Kremsmünster station on the S4, Upper Austria’s S-Bahn service on the Pyhrn Railway, is directly on the Kremstal Cycle Path. If you are planning a trip by train and bicycle, you can take this location into account. Check the S4 timetable before travelling.

When choosing where to stay, you can first consider what kind of outing matters most to you. The Climate Experience Trail is described by its number of stations and length; the Tempetal Trail and Wolfgang Trail are defined by their respective destinations. The Kremstal Cycle Path, in turn, brings the cycle route and the S4 station located directly beside it into the picture as a travel option. These distinctions help you consider cultural history, landscape destinations and transport as separate priorities.
