Vorderstoder offers a range of ways to enjoy a stay: a scenic hike, trails by the water and a parish church with late Gothic architectural and artistic heritage. When planning your time, you can focus on outdoor activities, a break by the water or cultural discoveries. A walking time is given for the route to the Stoderer Weitblick viewpoint; hiking around Windhaagersee depends on dry weather.
Hiking and Views
From the Almgasthof Baumschlagerberg in Vorderstoder, a 4.2-kilometre walking trail leads to the Stoderer Weitblick viewing platform in just over an hour. Walking time may vary depending on conditions. From the platform, panoramic views stretch across the natural landscape and surrounding mountains of Pyhrn-Priel. The starting point, trail length and viewpoint can all be factored into your itinerary.
Hiking Trail No. 9 starts at the municipal office in Vorderstoder. First, follow the road for about 150 metres towards Windischgarsten, then turn left onto the hiking trail. Check the signs before setting off, as trail markers and conditions may change.
Forest Lake and Natural Swimming Pond
Windhaagersee lies peacefully in the middle of the forest. A hunting lodge and benches by the shore invite you to take a quiet break. In dry weather, you can hike around the lake. As well as a chance to get active, the spot offers a place to pause by the water.
Schafferteich in Vorderstoder is a natural swimming pond in a beautiful setting. A bathing jetty and sunbathing lawn invite you to relax and enjoy the sun. At Windhaagersee, the focus is on hiking in dry weather; at Schafferteich, the jetty and lawn are the described options for a relaxing time by the water. Check current access arrangements before visiting.
Late Gothic Architecture and Art History
Vorderstoder’s parish church was built in the late Gothic style on the site of a wooden chapel and consecrated on 15 August 1507. It is dedicated to Margrave Leopold III, who was then Austria’s newest saint. A distinctive architectural feature is the net-ribbed vault, whose ribs form a net-like pattern across the vaulted ceiling.
Two of the church’s three bells also bear their own date: they were cast in 1401 and are among the oldest church bells in Upper Austria. Their casting date therefore predates the consecration of the late Gothic church. The church is also home to the late Gothic Madonna of the “Maria am Stein” altar of grace. She is flanked by Saints Joachim and Anne and portrayed as Queen of Heaven. The church thus combines architectural history with a specific religious image.
Landscape and Living Culture
Alpine pastures are part of the landscape around Vorderstoder, and the traditional cattle drive down from the mountain pastures is part of its living culture. For those interested in how the landscape and customs have shaped the village, these offer further facets of the destination alongside its trails and church art. The viewing platform, forest lake and parish church each appeal to different interests and can be explored as separate highlights.
