Monday morning weekly market, Friday fresh market: In Kirchdorf an der Krems, you can plan your stay around two different market days. There is also the Gothic parish church with its Baroque tower, Neupernstein Castle as a cultural center, and routes ranging from a walk in the town center to a multi-day pilgrimage circuit. When choosing accommodation, it therefore makes sense to start by asking what you want to focus on during your trip: markets and culture, a walk, cycling, or a longer route with stages.
Church and castle: architectural history and culture
The parish church of Kirchdorf an der Krems was consecrated on June 15, 1119, in honor of Saint Gregory. The prominent Gothic church has an imposing Baroque tower, a remarkable winged altar, and a beautiful late Gothic south portal. The church therefore brings together distinct architectural features. Neupernstein Castle adds another historical layer to the overview of the town: It was expanded into its present-day form between 1715 and 1718; the architect was Jakob Prandtauer. Since 2003, Neupernstein Castle has served as a cultural center. The church’s consecration, the parish church’s architectural details, and the castle’s cultural function offer different points of interest for a culture-focused stay.
Markets and culinary events
The weekly market takes place every Monday from 07:30 to 12:00, except on public holidays; operations may be reduced in winter. The fresh market takes place on Fridays from 09:00 to 13:00 at Simon-Redtenbacher-Platz. The two markets are held on different days of the week: For the Monday market, bear in mind the public holiday exception and possible winter restrictions. For the fresh market, it is advisable to check locally before visiting.
Another weekly event is the “Kesselheiße”: It takes place every Thursday morning at the Schöllhuber inn, known as “Schölli,” and celebrates the variety of Austrian sausage culture. From 08:30 to 12:00, a selection of sausage specialties is available, including Burenwurst, Krainer, Scharfe, Weißwurst, Waldviertler, Meterwurst, Frankfurter, and Debreziner. Check the schedule and selection before visiting, as the menu and service hours may change. Another culinary experience is the “Following the Trail of Chocolate, Coffee & Cider” tour, which offers insights into the production of chocolate, cider, and coffee.
Walking trails, cycling routes, and pump track
The Kremsweg loop is a flat walking trail through the center of Kirchdorf an der Krems. It runs along the Krems and returns via the Verschönerungsweg. The Kremstal Benedictine Pilgrimage Circuit is laid out differently: The 45-kilometer loop has three daily stages and passes through Kirchdorf an der Krems. This lets you choose between a walking route in the center and a route divided into stages over several days.
The Kremstalradweg R10 connects to the town center via signposted links; the signs were installed at the initiative of the Kirchdorf Tourism Committee. Another way to get moving on wheels is the paved Kirchdorf pump track. It covers around 850 square meters and is open free of charge to bicycles, scooters, inline skates, skateboards, and balance bikes. The facility has various lines, two double-table combinations, and changes of direction. While the R10 leads to the town center via signposted connections, the pump track’s offering is defined by its different course features.
Season and getting there
During the swimming season, the outdoor pool is open daily from 09:00 to 19:30, provided a maximum daily temperature of at least 20 °C is forecast. Planning a day at the pool therefore depends on both the season and the weather forecast. The ice rink is also open only during the season. Other admission tickets are available at the on-site ticket office; check opening times and ticket availability for the current winter season.
Kirchdorf an der Krems can be reached via the A 9 or B 138. The town is also on the Linz–Selzthal railway line; the station is called Kirchdorf / Krems. Check current train connections before traveling. This makes it possible to plan your journey and your priorities while there—markets, culture, a walk, or a route with stages—together.
