Spital am Pyhrn offers nature and culture topics with a range of different focuses. The water trail runs between the town centre and the valley station of the Wurzeralm funicular; the moor, winter activities and Baroque art are also among the local highlights. You can tailor your choice to your interests—from natural connections to historic blacksmithing and church art.
Water Trail and Moor
The Spital am Pyhrn water trail runs for around five kilometres between the town centre of Spital am Pyhrn and the valley station of the Wurzeralm funicular. Eleven information boards explain the flora and fauna, geology and ecological connections. The trail is well developed and easy to walk for visitors of all ages. The boards cover more than water-related topics alone: the local environment, geological aspects and ecological connections are also part of the trail’s content.
The Wurzeralm Nature Experience World offers a different perspective on nature. Its route loops around Teichlboden, the largest lowland and raised moor in the Northern Limestone Alps. Eight experience stations cover geology, alpine farming, moorland and karst. Compared with the water trail, alpine farming and karst add further points of interest here; the trail focuses on flora and fauna and ecological connections. If you are choosing a nature theme, these different emphases provide a clear guide.
Winter Activities on the Wurzeralm
In the Wurzeralm ski area, activities include winter hiking, cross-country skiing, ski touring and snowshoeing, in addition to skiing. The range therefore includes different kinds of winter activities. You can choose the focus of your day depending on whether skiing or one of the other activities mentioned is your priority.
Craftsmanship and Abbey History
The Lindermayr horseshoe and mattock forge was established after 1300 and served as the court forge of Spital am Pyhrn Abbey for more than 500 years. Its long-standing role as the court forge links the history of craftsmanship with that of the abbey. For culture enthusiasts, this offers a different way to explore local history than sacred art: here, the focus is on the historic function of a forge.
The church of the former Spital am Pyhrn Abbey was remodelled in the Baroque style by Johann Michael Prunner from 1714 to 1730. In Pyhrn Cathedral, Bartolomeo Altomonte’s frescoes in the presbytery are considered a highlight of Baroque church painting in Upper Austria. It is also home to the grille made by Andreas Ferdinand Lindermayr, considered one of Austria’s finest works of iron art. The paintings and ironwork thus offer different insights into the Baroque cultural heritage.
