Ried im Traunkreis is situated on a glacial moraine hill between the Krems and Alm rivers, 5 km west of Kremsmünster. Two late Gothic churches, Roman traces and the medieval Salt Road offer several historical perspectives on the town. There are also signposted running and Nordic walking routes, as well as seasonal activities. You can choose different focuses for your stay: local history, exercise or a nature hike arranged individually in advance.
Location, Getting Here and Routes
Ried is connected to the A9 Pyhrn motorway; check the details of the junction for your specific travel plans. The running and Nordic walking routes are well signposted, range from 4 to 20 km in length and all start at Ried village square in front of the municipal office. The different lengths make it easy to compare route distances. Signposting and starting arrangements may change, so check the current signs and starting point before setting out.
Gothic Churches
The parish church of Ried im Traunkreis was built in the late Gothic style between 1476 and 1480; its tower is covered in ivy. The branch church in Weigersdorf is also late Gothic. It is considered a special jewel of Gothic architecture and was originally intended as a pilgrimage church. Thus, the parish church stands out for its construction period and tower, while Weigersdorf also has the distinct historical aspect of its original purpose as a pilgrimage church.
Roman Traces and the Salt Road
A Roman stone with remnants of leaf ornaments is embedded in the south wall of a church. A coin of Emperor Probus, dated 282 AD, was found in Ried im Traunkreis in 1850. These archaeological traces attest to the Roman presence in Ried. The town was first mentioned in a document in 993. In the Middle Ages, Ried was an important stopping point on the Salt Road, which led east from the Salzkammergut. Roman finds, the early documentary mention and the medieval role as a stop on the route can therefore be viewed as distinct historical periods.
