The listed Widum at Unterweg 45 is a prominent landmark in the history of the church; in summer, the Navis Alpine Pasture Circuit leads from one alpine pasture to the next through the upper Navis Valley. Unterweg thus combines cultural history with practical questions about routes and travel. Depending on when you visit, you can focus more on the building’s history or on outdoor activities.
Widum and Church History
The Widum, the former vicarage that still stands today, is located at Unterweg 45. The building is a listed monument and was designed by Franz de Paula Penz. In Navis, it forms part of a group of religious buildings above the village square. The Widum can therefore be viewed both as a historic building in its own right and as part of this group of religious buildings.
A document from 1525 records the predecessor of the former parish church as a St Christopher’s Chapel. The former Gothic church was extensively remodelled in the Baroque style and enlarged in the 18th century under Penz. He was the initiator, client, designer and construction manager. His connection to the project links the design of the still-standing Widum with the remodelling of the earlier church. The new parish church was built in 1966/67 by architect Clemens Holzmeister.
To understand the chronology, it is important to distinguish between the former church and the later new building: the Baroque remodelling was carried out on the Gothic church, while Holzmeister designed the new parish church. The building phases described thus span the St Christopher’s Chapel documented in a historical record, the Baroque remodelling and a 20th-century church building.
Summer Routes and Toboggan Runs
In summer, the Navis Alpine Pasture Circuit is a hiking and (e-)mountain biking tour from one alpine pasture to the next in the upper Navis Valley. It follows the Naviser Unterweg and offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. This description covers the type of tour, its seasonal setting and a specific route. Check local conditions before setting out.
The “Naviser Unterweg” route offers another specific destination: it leads to the Naviser Hütte at an elevation of 1,766 m. The two route descriptions have different focuses: the Alpine Pasture Circuit highlights the route from one alpine pasture to the next and the panoramic views, while the Naviser Unterweg names the hut and its elevation as the destination. This lets you choose between the tours based on the route characteristics described.
Toboggan runs are also among the activities in Navis. The region’s runs are described as easy or intermediate. Before a winter outing, check local conditions before planning your trip around a particular run.
Getting to Unterweg
A route description dated 29 July 2025 states that bus route 580 runs via Navis Dorf and Unterweg to Matrei am Brenner. This specific route information can help you plan your journey; check the current timetable before travelling. This keeps the historical route information clearly separate from your current travel plans.
