Roman settlement, medieval routes and pilgrimage are among the historical layers of Mils near Hall. There are also signposted trails, a bench at a named scenic spot and seasonal activities. When planning your trip, you can focus on local history, exercise or winter experiences.

History and Village Life

The architectural heritage includes Schneeburg Castle, also known as Milserschlössl, and the Oswald Milser House in Mils. Both are protected historic monuments. Their names refer to two distinct buildings connected with the local history.

Archaeological excavations show that Mils was already settled in Roman times. In the early Middle Ages, the municipality was an important transport hub: the only road into the Lower Inn Valley ran through Mils. In the High Middle Ages, the village was one of the most important pilgrimage centres in the Inn Valley. Settlement, transport and pilgrimage are therefore three clearly distinct historical themes.

According to tradition, the Wayside Shrine of the Finding marks the place on the road from Oberdorf to Baumkirchen where the miraculous image of Mils was discovered many hundreds of years ago. The Matschgerer procession is part of village life during the carnival season. Even the youngest children take part, parading through the village in traditional costumes. The story thus spans long historical periods and a custom associated with the carnival season.

Trails and Landscape

The Mils Sculpture Trail begins at the end of Haslachweg. It follows the edge of the forest for about one kilometre, with no elevation gain, before returning to the starting point. Its approximate length and route make it a short, manageable option.

Mils has a total of six well-signposted Nordic walking and running routes. They start from two locations: “Bogner Aste” and “Mils Sports Ground”. The Weissenbach Loop is considered an easy route for beginners, while the Baumkirchnerwald Loop is described as challenging. This difference helps you choose a route to suit your preferred level of difficulty. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

The hiking trail from Mils to Baumkirchen also has a distinctive landscape feature: oak trees line the trail on the right-hand side. At Platz zu den Drei Eichen, a wooden bench stands beneath two oaks and an ash tree. While the row of oaks marks a section of the trail, the bench is part of a named spot with its own distinctive arrangement of trees.

Winter Activities

In winter, Mils has a groomed cross-country ski trail and a night toboggan run. These offer two different ways to stay active in the cold season: cross-country skiing and tobogganing. These are seasonal facilities; check snow conditions and operating details before travelling. Two seasonal dates are worth noting: the Matschgerer procession takes place during the carnival season, while the cross-country ski trail and night toboggan run are winter activities in Mils.
