When planning a stay in Sistrans, there are several themes to choose from: cultural history, paths through meadows and fields, and seasonal winter activities. Specific points of interest include historic chapels, a route with named destinations, and a bus stop in the village. Which of these takes priority for you can also influence your choice of travel dates.
Cultural History Between the Church and Chapels
A cultural walking trail leads to wayside crosses, wayside shrines, and façade paintings. The Glacier Chapel on Runstweg is also one of the chapels in Sistrans. Several dates record different periods in the village’s history: the church in Sistrans was mentioned in letters of indulgence in 1339; its Baroque redesign began in 1741 with the involvement of the Sistrans families Kienast and Mussack. The Isserhof was first mentioned in 1697 as a manor house belonging to Manikor. The War Memorial Chapel was built in 1714 as a square mortuary chapel in the cemetery’s southern wall.
Art and local traditions offer further points of interest. The mosaic of St. Gertraud in Sistrans was created in 1910 by the Zirl Mosaic Works under Mr. Pfefferle. A ceremony is held each year at the War Memorial Chapel on Seelsonntag, the Sunday after All Saints’ Day. If you would like to include this event in your travel plans, check the current dates.
Landscape and Historic Boundary
The Sischtiger Bannzaun was a dry-stone wall—built without mortar—that was once 600 m long. It separated Sistrans’s fields from the forest of the Aldrans farmers to the north and visibly marked the municipal boundary between Sistrans and Aldrans. Parts of the historic wall have fallen into disrepair. The Patscherkofel-Zirmberg Landscape Protection Area also includes parts of the municipality of Sistrans.
Planning Routes and Your Journey
There are several points of reference to consider when choosing a route: the Speckbacherweg passes through meadows and fields to Sistrans village and continues to the Igls Olympic Bobsleigh and Luge Track, in the direction of the Goldbichl Archaeological Trail. The Bee Nature Trail starts at the Tigls car park by the primary school. This gives you two different ways to plan: a named route and a specific starting point.
If you are planning to travel by bus, the “Sistrans Dorf” stop is served by buses M and 530. Check the current timetable before setting off. This will help you coordinate the bus connection with your other plans.
Seasonal Winter Activities
The Sistranser Alm natural toboggan run is 5 km long. As a seasonal route, conditions may vary, so take this into account when planning. An ice rink is also part of Sistrans’s winter activities, although its availability may vary by season. If either activity is the reason for your trip, check the conditions or availability for your preferred dates.
