Pettnau reveals its history through tangible traces: the branch church in Oberpettnau, the listed Mellaunerhof and the path to the so-called Einsiedel. The surrounding area also offers opportunities for walks, hikes and exploration. This means you can plan your trip around cultural history or time outdoors as distinct priorities. Stops in several districts and transport information help you find your way.
Churches and Architectural History
The branch church in Oberpettnau was built in 1412. It features ceiling and altarpiece paintings by Josef Anton Zoller; some of the Baroque figures are by Johann Perger. The construction date and artists’ names highlight different aspects: they place the church’s construction in its historical context and draw attention to specific elements of its artistic furnishings.
The parish church of St. George in Leiblfing is a Romanesque building; a renovation is said to have taken place as early as 1090. Its tower was built in 1710 and combines a bulbous dome with a slender spire. The dates refer to different events: 1090 indicates a possible renovation, while 1710 is the year the tower was built. Thus, an earlier, uncertain renovation date and a later tower construction stand side by side.
The Mellaunerhof and Its History
The listed Mellaunerhof is a historic inn in Pettnau; it has operated as an inn since around 1600, with no significant interruptions. The Late Gothic entrance portal is framed in breccia. The façade was given a Baroque makeover and decorated with paintings in the 20th century. The Mellaunerhof also contains the “Alte Selche,” which extends from the ground floor to the attic. The inn stands at a former ferry crossing over the Inn, on one of the main routes through the Inn Valley. Its history therefore includes the site’s former role in transport as well as its architectural history.
The Path to Einsiedel and Nature in the Surrounding Area
A path on Pettnau’s north-facing slope leads to the so-called Einsiedel. It features Stations of the Cross by Johann Obrleitner; at Einsiedel stands a chapel dedicated to “our Lord in Distress.” The stations give the path a religious connection, while the chapel links the destination to its own dedication. The area around Pettnau also offers plenty of nature for walks, hikes and exploration. Outdoor activities thus complement the historic sites with another focus for your stay.
The Seefeld ski area is in the region around Pettnau. If you are planning winter activities, check which facilities are open for the season before you travel.
