An old watermill wheel stands along the hiking trail from Ellbögen/Mühltal to Meißner Haus.
On Foot and by Bus
The hike starts at the paid parking lot in Ellbögen/Mühltal. The trail follows a stream and passes a chapel and an old watermill wheel. The stream, chapel and watermill wheel provide three distinct landmarks along the route, while Meißner Haus is the named destination. If you drive to the trailhead, take the parking fee into account. Check current trail conditions before setting out, as they can change.
The “Mühltal” stop is served by bus 560. If you plan to travel by bus, check the current timetable before your journey so you can fit the stop into your day's schedule.
Cycling in Mühltal and Ellbögen
The cycling tour along the old Roman road passes through the Ellbögen districts of St. Peter, Mühltal and Innerellbögen. A mountain biking tour from St. Peter via Mühltal towards Profeglalm is another suggested route. Seasonal conditions and route status can vary; check the current situation before setting off.
On the mountain biking route via Profeglalm, a section below the alm follows a forest road towards Meißner Haus. In a nature reserve, the route then switches to a blue-marked trail; conditions here can also change. Profeglalm, also known as Ochsenalm, lies at an altitude of 1,809 metres on the slope of Morgenkogel.
Different details are key to choosing a route: when hiking, the stream-side trail to Meißner Haus; on the Roman road, the sequence of three districts; and on the mountain bike route, the change from forest road to blue-marked trail. The routes can thus be distinguished by destination, sequence of places and trail conditions.
Chapels and Local History
The Florian Chapel in Mühltal was built in 1979/80. The Viggarer Lourdes Chapel at Mühltal 52 is a protected monument. These are two distinct historical points of reference: the construction period is specified for one chapel, while the protected status is noted for the other.
The parish church in Ellbögen has a Gothic north portal. Frescoes inside the church were uncovered in 1928 and during the last interior renovation in 1982. The dates mark two occasions when frescoes were uncovered, the second coinciding with the interior renovation. The portal and frescoes highlight different aspects of the building's architecture and interior history.
In Innerellbögen, the Hinterlocher Mill was renovated in 1995/96 and opened to the public as a demonstration mill. These dates refer to its renovation and opening as a demonstration mill; check current visiting arrangements before your visit.
Place names matter when planning cultural visits: the two chapels mentioned are in Mühltal, the parish church is in Ellbögen, and the Hinterlocher Mill is in Innerellbögen. The cultural attractions are therefore spread across different locations. When planning specific outings, you can distinguish the chapels in Mühltal from other cultural sites in Ellbögen.
