Rum combines a tangible history of architecture and customs with opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. The parish church of St. George, the Forstmeile and the Rumer Alm offer different starting points for planning your trip.

Architectural history and carnival customs

The parish church of St. George was completed in 1499, after the last of its three altars had been consecrated. Its architecture includes a Late Gothic nave and a slightly recessed choir with a square-ended apse. The interior of the church has been extensively remodelled in the Baroque style. At the same time, the four-bay nave with its stellar vault is a reminder of the Gothic period. The building thus brings together features from different architectural periods. The choir is set slightly back from the nave.

Other historical landmarks are also associated with specific places and dates. The Kaiserkreuz stands on a hill northwest of Rum. It was erected in 1848 to mark Emperor Franz Joseph I’s accession to the throne and renovated in 1898 for his jubilee. Along the new federal road in Rum are also 15 renovated stone wayside shrines.

The Rumer Marienkapelle was built to protect against the Rumer Mure mudslide. The carnival custom known as Mullen or Matschgern extends beyond Rum: it has been practised for centuries in the MARTHA villages of MĂĽhlau, Arzl, Rum, Thaur and Absam, north of Innsbruck. Rum is therefore part of a regional tradition rooted in several different places.

Green spaces and trails

Rum lies at the foot of the Karwendel Alpine Park, Austria’s largest nature park. One way to enjoy the area’s natural surroundings is the Forstmeile, at the foot of the Nordkette. It runs through Rum and offers visitors a break in the greenery. The Forstmeile is suitable for walkers, joggers and families alike.

If you are looking for another way to experience the landscape, consider adding the Rumer Alm to your plans. It can be reached on foot via various hiking trails, by mountain bike or, in winter, by toboggan. For a winter outing in particular, bear in mind that conditions and trail availability can vary. Check both before setting out.

Weighing up Rum as a place to stay

The area’s nearby centres may also be a factor when choosing accommodation. The centres of Innsbruck and Hall in Tirol are each just five kilometres from Rum and are easily accessible by public transport. If you plan to visit either or both destinations, consider the distance and accessibility when choosing where to stay. Check the timetables for your specific travel dates to better judge whether Rum suits the balance you want between staying locally and visiting the cities.
