For a hike in Studenzen, Studenzen-Fladnitz railway station is an obvious starting point: the “Reflections” cultural history trail and the Eichkögl and Fladnitzberg circular hike both begin there. Cycling routes, archaeological history and Styrian craftsmanship offer further options for a stay with a variety of interests.

Cycling Routes and Getting There

The southern section of the Raab Valley Cycle Route R11 runs from Gleisdorf via St. Margarethen, Studenzen/Fladnitz, Feldbach, Lödersdorf and Fehring to St. Martin an der Raab and Jennersdorf. The family-friendly Kirchbergvital cycle route offers a different connection to the area: after 2.5 km, it meets a shared walking and cycling path in the direction of Studenzen. This gives you two distinct cycling options: a route passing through a series of towns and a specific path connecting towards Studenzen.

To reach Zettl’s Country Garden, you can take RegioBus 440/404 to the Siegersdorf Abzw. Graberberg stop; from there, it is about 1.1 km on foot. Check connections before travelling.

Hiking and History

The “Reflections” trail begins at Studenzen-Fladnitz railway station. It can be walked or cycled in two stages, starting from either end. The Eichkögl and Fladnitzberg circular hike also starts at the station. Near Studenzen, it passes through meadows and woodland to the parish and pilgrimage church of Klein Mariazell. This offers a contrast between a cultural history trail and a hike focused on landscapes and a church.

Behind the railway station, at Fuchskogel, is Styria’s oldest fortified hilltop settlement, dating to the Early Bronze Age, around 2500 BC. The settlement includes a rampart. The village chapel in Studenzen is dedicated to Mary and is another local point of Marian devotion.

Craftsmanship and Local Culture

Since 1955, Trachtenmode Hiebaum in Studenzen has stood for quality, regional character and authentic craftsmanship. The company handcrafts the Vulkanland, Rosegger and classic Styrian traditional costumes from high-quality local materials. The experience is available on an ongoing basis; check booking details before your visit.

A special statue of Mary in Studenzen stands just a few steps from a wayside shrine. It is depicted as an Immaculate Conception: her feet rest on a serpent, the moon and the globe. The statue stands beneath a glass dome in an unusual structure made of glass and steel.

One of the six regional information boards stands by the war memorial. The Historical Association erected the boards in 2015 and 2016 to mark the 750th anniversary. They feature the Josephine land survey of 1784/1785, historical municipal coats of arms and brief excerpts from the history of the districts.

Zettl’s Country Garden

Zettl’s Country Garden is a 6,000 m² private garden laid out around a 250-year-old country house, which was renovated and converted in 1995. The garden includes a swimming pond of around 300 m² with a stream, as well as a spring-fed pond. Both ponds have lush plant growth.
