A 2-kilometer trail leads through the volcanic layers of the Kapfenstein volcano. There is also a museum dedicated to geological history, historic buildings, hiking trails, and topics related to ceramics and wine. You can choose what to explore based on your interests: geological processes are just as much in focus as the history of the castle or the landscape along the trails.

Volcanic Landscape and Castle History

The Kapfenstein volcano was formed by numerous eruptions. Rising magma met groundwater; powerful steam explosions hurled volcanic ash kilometers into the air. Kapfenstein Castle stands on the volcanic cone. It was built in the 10th to 11th century by the Kapfenstein family as a border fortress against the Magyars. This means that the site brings together a long history of construction and the geological development of the landscape.

The Catholic Parish Church of St. Nicholas is also a protected monument: it is protected by ordinance. Kapfenstein Castle’s protected status is based on an official decision pursuant to Section 3. Both entries are recorded in the Federal Monuments Authority register dated June 30, 2025. The parish church stands at the foot of the castle and offers a remarkable view.

Geological History at Geo-Info Kapfenstein

Geo-Info Kapfenstein is a museum dedicated to the geological development of the municipality and the Styrian Volcanic Land region. It is based on the regional geology collection of Prof. Dr. Arthur Winkler-Hermaden. The museum covers, among other things, olivine, pyroxene and spinel: these distinctive minerals reached the Earth’s surface around 2 million years ago with rising magma from a depth of about 60 kilometers and were hurled through the air during explosive volcanic eruptions.

The geological topics can be explored from the volcano in the landscape to the minerals and the conditions under which they formed. For trip planning, the Geo-Trail offers a specific route through the volcanic layers; Geo-Info adds the geological history of the municipality and region. You can focus on the landscape outdoors, its geological context, or both.

Hiking Trails with Different Distances

The Kapfenstein Geo-Trail – A Path Through the Volcano – is 2 kilometers long. The Path of Reflection leads over the Kapfensteiner Kogel; selected spots invite you to experience the diversity of nature and culture. Kapfenstein Parish Church is also located on four hiking trails: the Geo-Trail, the Path of Reflection, the 3-Kogel Trail and the From Glacier to Wine long-distance trail.

A longer route option is described as “Between Fehring and Kapfenstein – In the Footsteps of the Volcanoes,” covering 11.0 kilometers, taking 2 hours 30 minutes and involving an elevation difference of 260 meters. By comparison, the 2-kilometer Geo-Trail is much shorter; no corresponding duration is provided for it. The Genuss tour Handspur is a hike in southeastern Styria between Fehring and Kapfenstein. Therefore, you should not apply the stated route measurements for one trail to the other trails.

Horse Riding and Ceramics

Gestüt Kapfenstein offers guided rides for children with little riding experience. English-style riding lessons are also available with well-trained school horses of various breeds. Riding lessons can be arranged by telephone; rides can be booked with the provider.

Another cultural highlight is the Keramische Tage (Ceramics Days), held annually in Kapfenstein in late July or early August. If you would like to plan your trip around the event, check the date for your travel year. The Keramischer Kreis Kapfenstein works to preserve and further develop ceramic culture.

Winegrowing on the Kapfensteiner Kogel

The Winkler-Hermaden family winery is situated on the slope of the Kapfensteiner Kogel and cultivates around 40 hectares of vineyards. Twelve hectares of this area are in Klöch and come from the former estates of the Counts of Stürgkh. Since 2009, the entire area has been farmed organically. The area in Klöch is therefore included in the stated total, but is not on the Kapfensteiner Kogel.

The Lange Keller in the winery’s Meierhof is suitable for tastings with groups. If you are planning a group tasting, you can consider this venue as a specific connection to wine in Kapfenstein. The information about the vineyard areas and organic farming describes the winery; it does not replace information about an individual stay or accommodation.

Kapfenstein thus offers several different points of interest for a trip: volcanology and a museum, the castle and parish church, trails of varying lengths, as well as ceramics and wine. Choose your focus based on which of these topics you would like to explore more closely on site.
