Bad Gleichenberg offers a range of reasons to visit: its spa park combines historic garden design with modern thermal spa facilities, while hiking trails, a museum and nearby attractions provide other highlights. When planning your trip, it helps to first consider whether you want to focus mainly on the park and thermal waters, the history of the spa town, or outdoor activities and attractions.
Spa Park and Spa History
The approximately 20-hectare spa park was laid out in 1837 in the style of English landscape gardens. It is also home to a California redwood that is about 150 years old. The fountain temple above the Konstantin Spring was also built in 1837. A later structural change can be seen in the spring enclosure of the fountain hall: it was renovated in 1864 and replaced with an octagon.
The Bad Gleichenberg Spa Museum is located where drinking cures were once held. It displays memorabilia and collectibles from more than 180 years of spa tradition. Together, the historic garden design, the buildings at the springs and the museum collection offer different insights into the history of the spa town.
Thermal Waters and Sauna
Bad Gleichenberg has two thermal springs with temperatures of 24°C and 40°C. The Therme der Ruhe Bad Gleichenberg offers indoor and outdoor thermal pools in the heart of the spa park. The sauna area includes daily special infusions in the Platane outdoor sauna and a brine steam bath. In addition to the pools, the facilities therefore include a range of sauna experiences. As facilities and wellness programs may change, check the latest information before your visit.
Hiking with Different Themes
The Herzspur is a sensory hiking trail with 12 stations. It follows a figure-eight loop from Bad Gleichenberg to Trautmannsdorf and back. The route is 8.2 km long, and the walk takes about three hours.
The Art & Energy Hiking Trail focuses on natural phenomena and forces, expressed through visual art. This gives you a choice of two different hiking experiences: for the Herzspur, the loop shape, stations and approximate walking time are key points to consider; the Art & Energy Hiking Trail takes an artistic approach to natural phenomena.
Water Shows and Biedermeier Festival
The Bad Gleichenberg water shows combine water, light and music in the spa park to create an atmospheric experience. The Biedermeier Festival offers a different cultural highlight: the 2027 program includes traditional crafts demonstrations and a parade with horse-drawn carriages, brass bands and numerous groups in historical costumes. Program details can vary from year to year, so check the dates before planning a visit to the festival.
Another Excursion Highlight
Styrassic Park offers high and low ropes courses and a zip line above the dinosaurs. In the woods, a circular trail takes you past more than 100 life-size dinosaurs. This excursion is quite different from the historic and natural highlights of the spa park and its hiking trails. When choosing what to see in Bad Gleichenberg based on your interests, you can weigh up spa history, thermal facilities, nature trails and the dinosaur trail.
