Riegersburg Castle stands on a volcanic rock formation 482 metres high. Culture, trails, water and tastings offer different ways to shape your stay: first consider whether you mainly want to explore the castle and its history, enjoy outdoor activities or sample local delights.

Castle and history

Seven gates, eleven bastions, four kilometres of defensive walls and two moats define the castle complex. Anyone interested in historic architecture will find not only its setting on volcanic rock, but also specific architectural details that help bring the complex to life.

At the Witch Museum, videos, audio installations and informative texts offer insights into a dark chapter in the history of Styria. The weapons museum’s collection ranges from armour and armour components to sabres and rapiers, as well as various cutting and thrusting weapons, different types of rifles and pistols. The two collections have different focuses: one centres on interpreting a historical subject, while the other presents a diverse collection of weapons and equipment.

Riegersburg Parish Church offers another perspective on architectural history: it was built in two stages in the Late Gothic style. Its furnishings date primarily from the Baroque and Renaissance periods. Its architecture and furnishings thus reflect different art-historical periods.

Trails, via ferratas and water

Since 2024, Riegersburg has held the Austrian Hiking Quality Seal and is therefore an Austrian Hiking Village. The Obstgartentour-FB7 is a pleasant, moderate loop around Riegersburg. Via ferratas start elsewhere: they are just a few minutes’ walk from the castle entrance in the town of Riegersburg. This lets you choose between a marked loop and via ferratas without treating the two as the same type of activity.

At the foot of Riegersburg is the Seebad, with 18,000 m² of water and an equally large sunbathing area. It is a seasonal facility, so check its operating period before your visit.

The Riegersburg Bird of Prey Centre is located a little below the main castle on the north side of the volcanic cone, where bird of prey shows are presented. The visitor programme is seasonal; check the date before your trip. Flight demonstrations do not take place in heavy rain.

Fromagerie zu Riegersburg offers various tours for groups. These include an extensive guided tour introducing visitors to the world of cheese, with a tasting of ten cheeses that are currently ripe.
