A former district prison is home to the Egon Schiele Museum in Tulln. It is dedicated to the artist’s biography and early work. The former district prison gives the museum an unusual setting.
Art, History and Special Places
The Schubert Castle in Atzenbrugg also focuses on a single artist: the 600 m² exhibition uses interactive elements, listening stations and other interpretive features to explore Franz Schubert’s life and work. The park by the castle is freely accessible and open year-round. As conditions on site may change, it is best to check them before your visit.
Other museums offer insights into the history of places and people. The Michelhausen Local History Museum spans several centuries of local history. Its exhibition covers topics including the municipality and its localities, schools, churches and agriculture. The Leopold Figl Museum in Rust is dedicated to Leopold Figl, Austria’s first Federal Chancellor after the Second World War. Michelhausen is also home to the Roman Burial Ground, an archaeological monument that recalls the municipality’s past.
Roman heritage is particularly vivid in Zeiselmauer, where Roman walls, a fan-shaped tower, a granary and a flag shrine have been preserved, among other remains. Sieghartskirchen also has historic landmarks: Ried Castle Ruins date back to the 12th century, and Rappoltenkirchen Castle is one of the historic sights. The Roman tombs in Kronstein are listed there as an excursion destination. For a different kind of discovery, visit DIE GARTEN TULLN, with its 70 show gardens; it is Europe’s first and only ecological garden show.
Ponds, Paths and Wine Country
The Sitzenberg Castle Pond is a 12-hectare body of water and part of sustainable, nature-oriented pond management. The Carp Discovery Trail is an easy circular walk around the pond. The route takes about 45 minutes, and information boards cover fishing and carp farming. This trail combines exercise with insights into local pond management.
Another easy circular walk in Sitzenberg-Reidling passes through unspoilt countryside and the Ahrenberger-Eichberger cellar lane. Its focus differs from that of the Carp Discovery Trail: here, the landscape and cellar lane set the scene, while fishing and carp farming are the focus there. In Königsbrunn am Wagram, well-preserved cellar lanes, carefully tended vineyards and views across the Tullnerfeld shape the landscape. Wineries in and around the village invite visitors to wine tastings and traditional Heuriger wine taverns. As participating businesses and dates may change, check in advance what is on offer during your trip.
The Tulbingerkogel also offers a clear landmark in the landscape: the Leopold Figl lookout tower stands at its summit, 494 metres above sea level, the highest point in Tulln District. Those who prefer different routes will find quiet, well-marked hiking, cycling and riding trails in Sieghartskirchen. They cross meadows and fields through the countryside. Trail conditions can change, so check the latest information as you plan.
Stage, Market and Regional Events
From June to August, artists from the worlds of music, cabaret and comedy perform at the DonaubĂĽhne Tulln. The DonaubĂĽhne is the largest open-air stage on the Danube; programmes vary by event. In Sitzenberg, the fish-harvesting festival is one of the traditional celebrations, while the annual summer theatre performances are a feature of present-day life at Sitzenberg Castle. If you would like to plan your trip around a performance or festival, check the specific event dates.
The Kirchberg Naschmarkt offers another opportunity to discover regional produce on Saturday mornings: local farmers sell their products there. Market dates may change, so it is worth checking the schedule before your visit. Königsbrunn am Wagram is described as accessible via the nearby S5 expressway and rail connections in the surrounding area; the village can be reached from both Vienna and Krems. Check current road and rail connections before travelling.
