Mallon lies south of the Wagram and is a broad-street village. The term describes a village layout whose buildings are arranged along a wide street. During your stay, you can choose from local history, architecture, astronomy, viticulture and a specific route: the first documented mention in 1192, historic building fabric and the biography of an astronomer sit alongside the Triesneckerhof and Route 4a.

Village History and Architecture

Mallon was first mentioned in a document in 1192. Before the land consolidation in 1961, the Trinity monument stood at the crossroads of the old roads from Mallon to Neustift and from Dörfl to Kollersdorf. Land consolidation is the reorganisation of agricultural land.

The core of house no. 6 in Mallon contains building fabric dating from the 16th to 17th centuries; the two-storey building has a late Secessionist façade. The date refers to the building’s core, while the style term refers to the façade. Mallon’s local chapel is on the northern edge of the village. Wayside shrine 420/1 in Mallon is protected as a monument under an ordinance. A wayside shrine is a small religious monument.

For visitors interested in culture, this offers two different perspectives: the buildings and historical dates anchor the village’s history in the place itself, while Triesnecker’s birthplace and lunar names extend it into the history of science.

Franz de Paula Triesnecker and Astronomy

Franz de Paula Triesnecker was born in Mallon on 2 April 1745. He was an Austrian astronomer, geodesist, mathematician, philosopher and theologian. Geodesy deals with the measurement and shape of the Earth; these professional titles thus encompass the natural sciences and mathematics as well as philosophy and theology. The lunar crater Triesnecker and a rille on the Moon are named after him. A rille is an elongated landform on the lunar surface. While the history of architecture can be read in buildings, Triesnecker’s namesake legacy reaches as far as features on the Moon.

Viticulture and Visit Planning

The Triesneckerhof in Mallon near Kirchberg am Wagram is a traditional family winery with a history spanning more than 275 years. On loess and primary rock soils, it grows GrĂĽner Veltliner, Riesling, Zweigelt, as well as the PIWI grape varieties Johanniter and Sauvignier Gris. PIWI refers to fungus-resistant grape varieties. Soil and grape variety details may change with production. Tastings and direct sales are available by appointment; if you plan to take advantage of either, arrange your visit in advance.

Route and Bus

Route 4a passes through Mallon and Dörfl on its way back to Kirchberg. Route details may change; check the current route before setting out. For regional bus line 864, the timetable lists the Mallon Kapelle stop; the weekday services shown there are valid from 14 December 2025. Check the departure time for your travel date. The route and timetable provide different planning information: the route describes a path through several places, while the timetable gives a stop and weekday services.
