Tulbing extends from the northern slope of the Vienna Woods to the Tullnerfeld. This geographical range gives your stay two different perspectives: trails are a feature in their own right in the landscape, while churches, chapels and individual buildings reveal local history and religious art. When planning your stay, you can focus on walking, architecture, views or wine, depending on your interests.

Landscape and Trails

The extended Steps Trail is 8.7 kilometres long and covers about 12,430 steps. The combination of distance and approximate step count gives you a concrete measure of the route. The Planet Trail offers a different route description: it leads via Jahnhöhe directly to Tulbingerkogel, giving you a clear destination.

The Hängender Stein route also leads to Tulbing along a trail. Its surface mix consists of 54 percent asphalt, 40 percent gravel and 6 percent forest or meadow. While the Planet Trail focuses on where the route leads, this information describes its surface. The two route descriptions therefore provide different points of reference for planning.

Church and Local History

The parish church of St. Mauritius stands in an elevated position southeast of the town centre and has had its present form since 1489. It is late Gothic; its Baroque high altar depicts the entry of St. Mauritius into heaven. The organ dates from 1691. The church thus brings together several historical periods: its present form, dating from 1489, as well as its Baroque furnishings and the organ, which has a recorded date.

Five listed Baroque stone groups stand at the church entrance. A sculptor from Tulln created them in 1736 from Zogelsdorf sandstone; they represent the five mysteries of the Rosary. The material, year of creation and subject matter come together in an ensemble with clearly defined religious symbolism. Today’s Tulbing Castle also has a historical connection to Seitenstetten Abbey: it was once the abbey’s monastic farm.

Other Religious Buildings

In Katzelsdorf an der Zeil stands a sandstone statue of St. John of Nepomuk, erected in 1735. The parish church of St. Aegidius in Katzelsdorf features elements of a fortified church and late Romanesque architectural elements. The statue and church offer different historical points of interest: a dated sandstone sculpture in one case, and a church with late Romanesque and fortified-church features in the other.

The St. Hubertus Chapel on Passauerstraße, in the direction of Passauerhof, was built by the Katzelsdorf hunting association. In Wilfersdorf, the chapel’s interior was built in 1905. These buildings add different places and forms to the historical themes. When planning your visit, you can decide whether to focus on a church or chapel or include several religious buildings.

Wine, Views and Tulbingerkogel

The International Sommelier Vineyard features a show vineyard with different grape varieties from 30 countries. This brings international varietal diversity into focus. For a stay that includes wine as well as trails and buildings, the show vineyard offers a distinctive feature of its own.

The Leopold Figl Observation Tower on Tulbingerkogel is made of concrete and was designed by Prof. Clemens Holzmeister. From the tower, the view extends as far as the Alps and the Danube. The Tulbingerkogel Chapel is dedicated to St. John of God. Holy Mass is generally held there weekly, and services are also celebrated on special feast days. If you would like to plan your visit around a church service, it is advisable to check the current parish schedule, as the regular schedule may change.
