Altenwörth combines cycling routes with a long history on the Danube. The sixth stage of the Danube Cycle Path on the north bank, from Krems to Tulln, passes through the town; here, cyclists switch banks because of the Danube power station. Church architecture, historic floods and a themed trail tell further chapters of the town’s story. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can plan your stay around your preferred cycling and walking routes and the time available.

By bike: stages and connections

The Danube Cycle Path is not the only cycling route to Altenwörth described here. The approximately 18-kilometre Wagram Route connects the Weinviertel Route with the Danube Cycle Path. In the Kirchberg area, it runs from Altenwörth via Gigging, Neustift, Kirchberg and Engelmannsbrunn to Fels, where it meets the Weinviertel Route. For planning purposes, both its approximate length and its route through several towns are relevant.

The family-friendly Traisen-Danube Cycling Route is a side route of the Traisental Cycle Path. It passes through Sitzenberg-Reidling and reaches the Danube Cycle Path at Altenwörth. Another option is the Kamptal Cycle Path, which starts in Altenwörth and ends in Zwettl. The Danube Tour also reaches Altenwörth: the town lies beside a Danube backwater on the edge of the floodplain forest. The routes therefore differ both in their connections and in their stated endpoints.

Along the backwater and on foot

The Danube backwater is nestled in the species-rich Danube floodplains. Since spring 2004, two bathing jetties have been available there, making the backwater a popular swimming spot. Check the current conditions at the site before your visit. If you would rather cover a route on foot, the Beaver Trail is a 7-kilometre route. It takes about 1.5 hours to walk; along the way, you follow in the footsteps of beavers. Signage and trail conditions can change, so it is advisable to check the situation at the site.

The Danube-Kamp Loop is a 26-kilometre cycling or hiking route from Altenwörth along the Danube. The cycling time is 1.5 hours, and the walking time is 6.5 hours. Compared with the Beaver Trail, this route therefore requires considerably more time on foot; the different time estimates help you choose between the two routes. The Nostalgia Trail adds a historical perspective to these routes: its twelve panels describe life on the Danube, its dangers and the economic opportunities it has offered over the course of history.

Church architecture, houses and Danube history

The main street is lined mostly with single-storey cross-wing farmhouses and houses with street-facing façades, some with façades dating to around 1900. One building has further distinctive details: House No. 6 is single-storey, has a mansard hipped roof and a commemorative plaque for Emperor Franz Joseph bearing the year 1908. These houses and the parish church offer different historical points of reference in the townscape.

The parish church is dedicated to Saint Andrew and is a Josephine hall church. It was probably first mentioned in a document as early as 865. Because of frequent Danube floods, the parish of Altenwörth was moved to Kirchberg am Wagram in 1147 and re-established in 1784. A sandstone statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, dated 1715, also stands in the church square. Taken together, these details trace the story from the early history of the church through the consequences of flooding to a specific monument in the church square.
