Gothic architecture, the history of alchemy and trails through the loess landscape offer various ways to explore Oberstockstall. In addition to the castle, walking and cycling routes pass a series of named places and landscape features; regional products add to the picture of the village.

Castle Chapel and the History of Alchemy

The castle chapel at Schloss Oberstockstall dates from around 1320 and is largely preserved as a complete Gothic structure. A 16th-century alchemists’ workshop was housed in the sacristy. The castle therefore brings together two distinct historical points of interest: the chapel can be understood through its period and Gothic form, while the workshop’s history describes a later use of the sacristy. Architecture enthusiasts can choose the chapel as a specific point of interest; the alchemists’ workshop offers a different focus: the history of alchemical work.

Exploring on Foot and by Bike

On foot, there are two routes with clearly distinct features to choose from. The “Tut gut!” Steps Route 1 in Kirchberg am Wagram is 4.4 km long and takes 1 hour and 15 minutes to walk. It leads from Alchemistenpark along the Celtic tree avenue towards Oberstockstall, across the pedestrian crossing by Gasthof Ehn to Schloss Oberstockstall, and on to Kellergasse Mayrgraben. The stated distance and duration make it easier to set aside a specific amount of time for this walk. The “Tut gut!” Hiking Route 2 is a circular route: it passes through Unterstockstall, Mitterstockstall and Schlossberg before returning to Alchemistenpark via Oberstockstall. Route 1 has a stated walking time and distance; Route 2 can be identified by its circular layout and the named stops along the way.

There are two differently themed connections for a cycling tour. The Kellergassen Tour starts at the regional wine shop in Kirchberg, passes Alchemistenpark and goes by Schloss Oberstockstall. The 39 km Löss Tour runs along distinctive loess formations and through ravines cut deep into the loess near Oberstockstall and Ruppersthal. While the Kellergassen Tour links its stops from the starting point to the castle, the Löss Tour focuses on the landforms along the route. Route details for the Löss Tour may change, so check the current route description before setting out.

Winegrowing and Regional Products

Winegrowing and fruit growing are also part of the local character. Wein Schnaps Groll is a family-run business in Oberstockstall, in the Wagram wine-growing region, and produces wine and fruit. Its products include fine spirits such as apple and plum brandy, liqueurs such as Alchemistenlikör and Hausgeheimnis, as well as extracts, juices and fruit spreads. Gut Oberstockstall offers wine tastings; check the current times in advance. If you would like to include products from Wein Schnaps Groll or plan a visit, also ask in advance about availability and visiting options.
