Castle history and fortifications shape Marchegg’s cultural landscape. The castle is also a starting point for other topics: the Stork House is located in Marchegg Castle, and a route from there leads to the town’s sights. The Stork House is an information centre for nature tourism in the Marchfeld region. This brings together historical developments and information about the floodplain for your trip planning.
Castle, City Wall and Museum
In 1629, Paul Pálffy converted Marchegg Castle into a moated castle. From 1733, the Counts Pálffy transformed the castle into an elegant country estate in the Baroque style. The timeline distinguishes two stages in the castle’s history: its conversion into a moated castle and its later Baroque transformation into a country estate. Visitors interested in architectural history can explore the castle’s development through its different phases.
The fortifications include the surviving remains of the city wall, which is up to 8 metres high. The Vienna Gate and the Hungarian Gate are among the surviving former watchtowers and entrances to the town of Marchegg. Marchegg Town Museum is divided into three sections, housed in the old toll house, the Wagenburg and the granary. The castle’s history, the fortifications and the museum’s three locations each offer a different perspective and way to explore the town’s history. Museum opening arrangements may vary, so check in advance.
Route and Digital Tours
A route leads from the castle along the city wall to the church, the Powder Tower and other sights in the town. Check the route signage and accessibility locally. The “Ortsspaziergänge” app offers audio stories, historical photographs and 360° images for the tours, along with further information about sights and historical events. The route primarily shows which places it passes, while the app provides additional narrative, visual and further background content for the tours.
Nature Information and Floodplain Nature Trail
The Stork House offers guided tours around Marchegg Castle, into the Lower March Floodplains and in the surrounding area of the diverse Marchfeld region. These areas illustrate the scope of the tours, from the castle grounds to the floodplains and the wider Marchfeld region. Check the latest dates for guided tours before your trip.
The floodplain nature trail in the floodplain reserve on Unkenweg offers walks along boardwalks. It provides information about the floodplain and its flora and fauna, and allows visitors to observe nature from viewing platforms. Walking, information and observation come together here. The guided tours, with their specified areas, can be compared with the nature trail, with its boardwalks, information and platforms. Trail conditions may change; check them before your visit.
