The almost completely preserved city wall encloses the centre of Groß-Enzersdorf. Construction began around the middle of the 14th century, giving the town a distinct historical focus. A walk along the promenade path around the city wall and old Groß-Enzersdorf takes about 45 minutes. This estimate helps you plan the walk as a separate activity; allow extra time for museum visits or additional routes.

City History at the Museum

Different periods come together at the Groß-Enzersdorf City Museum. On display are numerous historical artefacts and documents, as well as a model of medieval Encinesdorf. An interactive city museum cinema offers selected videos and interviews. The permanent exhibition “Understanding Who We Are: From the 1021 Donation Area to the Greater Municipality” was redesigned in 2024 and provides, for the first time, an insight into the entire greater municipality. An imperial diploma, issued on 14 November 1021, brings two settlement centres in what is now the municipality into the historical record for the first time.

Another focus, presented under the title “Against Forgetting”, uses the “RegioBiograph” to explore the life stories of Jewish citizens who were expelled or died. In this way, the museum connects the history of the town and municipality with personal life stories. Exhibitions and interactive content may change.

City Wall, Walks and Circular Routes

The city wall park offers an approximately 2.1 km accessible path around the town centre. The park also has a 130 m treetop walk. These two distances give an idea of the different lengths of paths in the park: around the town centre or along the shorter route through the treetops. The path and some park installations may be affected by maintenance work at times; check their condition before your visit.

Other routes offer their own highlights. The “Time Travel Groß-Enzersdorf” circular route takes you through the town’s history. The “Tut Gut Weg” starts right outside the town hall. Various guided tours explore the past and culture of Groß-Enzersdorf; formats and dates may vary. If you prefer to explore independently, you can use the circular routes and the walk along the promenade path as different starting points for discovering the town’s history.

City Park, Lobau and Programmes

The city park is designed as a “Hildegard von Bingen” experience park and introduces visitors to the world of medicinal herbs. Its focus on herbs offers a different perspective from the city wall and museum. Groß-Enzersdorf also borders the Lobau floodplain nature reserve. This connection to the surrounding landscape helps you get your bearings locally, without implying any particular route or access point to the protected area.

The NationalparkCamp Lobau, at Lobaustraße 100, 2301 Groß-Enzersdorf, offers experience-based educational and leisure programmes throughout the year. Visits and programmes are by arrangement; dates may change. If you would like to include this in your stay, arrange your visit in advance.
