Velm-Götzendorf brings together wine cellar lanes, local history and cycle routes. A distinctive highlight is Kellerberg, with its four terraces and numerous cellars. The chapel, parish church, quarry and monuments offer further historical points of interest. When planning your trip, it is worth deciding first whether you would like to focus mainly on Kellerberg and local history or on a cycling tour.

Kellerberg: four terraces and vaulted cellars

Kellerberg consists entirely of loess and includes 137 wine-press houses or cellars arranged across four terraces. Large, shady lime and walnut trees line the terraces. There are often up to four vaulted cellars stacked on top of one another. If all the cellars were connected, their total length would be about six kilometres.

A Kellerberg tour includes a guided walk through the organic vineyard and an introduction to the herb project. It also takes you to Kunekune grazing pigs. This almost-extinct domestic breed of Māori origin from New Zealand helps manage the vines. The tour also includes Zillinger’s cellar worlds, which extend up to 40 metres underground, including the Baccus cellar, the amphora cellar and the Glück cellar.

The cellars in Velm-Götzendorf’s wine cellar lane may be opened for events or guided tours. Events held at Kellerberg include the Kellerfest (Cellar Festival). If you are planning a guided tour or festival, check the dates and tour availability in advance.

Chapel, parish church and local history

A chapel was built in Götzendorf in 1260; a tower was added to it in 1778. Götzendorf became a parish in 1784. Götzendorf Parish Church is dedicated to Saint Leopold and is a listed monument. Its design is a simple classical building with a Baroque tradition.

The Götzendorf quarry also reflects the town’s history: in 1250, it gained importance through the construction of many churches and stone buildings made from Götzendorf sandstone. The sandstone was also used to build the Augustinian choir of St Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna.

In Velm, master miller Ferdinand Planner had a statue of the Virgin Mary erected beside the mill in 1709. It is the oldest monument in Velm. The war memorial was erected in the first half of the 20th century.

Landscape and cycle route

The small municipality is surrounded by fields, windbreaks and a small wood. The Sulzbach and its tributaries flow through the municipal area.

The Muskateller wine cycle route passes through Velm-Götzendorf; the Muskateller cycle route is about 62 kilometres long. Several other cycle routes pass by Velm-Götzendorf. This distinction is useful for planning: the wine cycle route mentioned above goes through the village, while the other routes may pass by it. The approximate route length provides a concrete point of reference without determining by itself how you plan your cycling days.

If you are looking for a holiday apartment for a stay in Velm-Götzendorf, you can use the reason for your trip as a starting point: Kellerberg and local history on the one hand, the Muskateller cycle route on the other.
