Auersthal can be discovered through its diverse cultural heritage and natural surroundings: St. Nicholas Parish Church stands on a hill in the centre of the village. Wayside shrines, Wunderberg Cellar Lane and the Chapel of St. Margaret offer other points of interest; paths lead through the municipality and alongside the biotope. You can choose between architectural history, outdoor memorials and walking trails.

St. Nicholas Parish Church and Local History

St. Nicholas Parish Church has stood on a hill in the centre of Auersthal for over 600 years. It was first built between 1333 and 1338 in the Gothic style, using hewn stone. In 1489, the church was burned down under Matthias Corvinus, King of Hungary. The people of Auersthal immediately rebuilt it. The village’s story therefore includes both the church’s early construction and its destruction and reconstruction. Its central, elevated location also makes the church a prominent landmark in the village.

Small Monuments Along the Way

Auersthal still has 30 wayside shrines, small chapels and crosses. The village renewal association restores and maintains these popular local monuments. They served different purposes: some were used as waymarkers, while others were erected as votive or thanksgiving signs for particular events. Still others commemorate wars, epidemics, severe weather and tragic accidents. Together, they tell not only of religious themes but also of what people wanted to remember.

The small monuments along the Marterl walking trail are best discovered on foot or by bike. This offers a different way to explore local history than visiting a single building: the focus here is on numerous small memorials and the different occasions they commemorate. If you would rather explore a historic lane, you can also get around on foot or by bicycle.

Wunderberg Cellar Lane and Events

You can explore the historic Wunderberg Cellar Lane on foot or by bicycle. There is a specific restriction on visiting the cellars: they are open only during events or guided tours. So if you would also like to see the interiors, plan your visit around an event or guided tour. At Advent at Wunderberg, the Advent trail organised by the Auersthal Village Renewal Association includes over 30 open cellars decorated for Christmas.

Events take place throughout the year. Examples include the Auersthal fair and the autumn festival. Dates vary from event to event, so check the specific dates if you want to plan your trip around a festival. This lets you distinguish a general stay from a visit specifically timed to coincide with an event.

Chapel, Trails and Nature

Outside Auersthal, surrounded by vineyards and fields, stands the Chapel of St. Margaret. It is an example of modern chapel architecture in concrete. Compared with the Gothic parish church, it offers a different architectural impression: the focus here is on modern construction and its setting among fields and vineyards. The St. Francis Way runs through the municipality of Auersthal and is another named route option.

Walking trails wind through the forest by the biotope; a small pond lies behind the trees. This is a different way to spend time in Auersthal than admiring buildings or small monuments: the emphasis here is on forest trails and the pond. Equipment is also available at the Auersthal fitness park. The options therefore include cultural attractions, paths through green surroundings and the opportunity to visit the fitness park.
