In Wolfsberg, preserved sections of the medieval town wall can be found on Schlossberg and at Rossmarkt. The tower of the late Romanesque parish church of St. Markus offers a different view of the city: its viewing gallery is 33 metres above it. In this way, the remains of the wall and the church tower tell the story of Wolfsberg’s architectural history in different ways.
City History and Vibrant Culture
During the summer months, contemporary artists display their work at Wolfsberg Castle. As the exhibition programme is seasonal, check in advance which exhibitions are planned for your travel dates. The Museum im Lavanthaus features multimedia and interactive exhibits and covers around 15 subject areas. Examples include a Lavant Valley dialect quiz and a digital flower book—hands-on ways to explore language and plant life as part of a museum visit.
The Leonhardikirche in Bad St. Leonhard is also worth a look for its regional architecture: it is considered one of Carinthia’s most beautiful Gothic churches. The Leonhardikirche and the late Romanesque church tower of St. Markus represent different periods and make historic architecture a discovery in its own right.
Cider Culture and Wine Heritage
The Zogglhof houses the Mostbarkeiten Gallery and the Fruit Tree Museum under one roof. This brings together two topics related to fruit and cider, without requiring you to visit different buildings. The international cider fair “Mostbarkeiten-Kostbarkeiten” is also held there in May. Check the specific event dates for your chosen year.
Another facet of the region’s food and drink culture is vinumpaulinum, the wine brand of St. Paul’s Benedictine Abbey. The wines of the Stift St. Paul estate come from Archduke Johann’s vineyards near Maribor and from favourable locations in the Lavant Valley.
Water, Trails and Landscapes
The Pomsbach rises in the Großer Kar and plunges 15 metres in several cascades. It forms the Poms Waterfall natural monument. On the Hebalm, the natural lake Hebalmsee is one of the area’s distinctive landscape features. The two places showcase water in different ways: one as cascades, the other as a lake.
The Water Nature Trail starts at the “St. Gertraud Umkehrschleife” bus stop. The 3.2-kilometre route is listed as taking one hour and is of moderate difficulty. As trail conditions and maintenance can change, check them before your hike. This will help you take the distance, time required and character of the trail into account when planning.
On the Koralpe, the circular hiking trail offers panoramic views and is considered a family-friendly route for easy to moderately difficult hikes. The bee nature trail near St. Andrä explores a different topic: it is 5.5 kilometres long and has eight information boards. There is also an observation beehive at the former Müllerwirt inn in Mühldorf. The word “former” is important when finding your way around the area.
At Klippitztörl, the summer toboggan run combines a length of 1,400 metres with 260 metres of elevation change. The adventure climbing park features suspension bridges, a via ferrata, rock and tree elements, and zip lines. These are two different ways to enjoy active leisure. Getting to the Lavant Valley
Since 12 December 2025, the Koralmbahn has travelled to the Lavant Valley in around 36 minutes from Graz and around 3 hours and 5 minutes from Vienna. These are approximate journey times; check the current timetable when planning your trip. By car, the Lavant Valley is accessible via the A 2 Süd Autobahn, with exits at Bad St. Leonhard, Wolfsberg Nord, Wolfsberg Süd and St. Andrä. Both options provide guidance for travelling to the Lavant Valley.
