The Dobratsch circular hiking trail leads through five stages across landscapes featuring former burial mounds, mining tunnels, former monastery sites and ancient Roman roads. Traces of different eras give the trail its own historical setting. Further discoveries await on cycling routes through regions and across national borders, at lakes and viewpoints, and in museums and culinary experiences.
Cycling routes across regions and borders
The Drau Cycle Path has been awarded a 5-star quality rating by the ADFC. Crossing national borders, it leads from South Tyrol via East Tyrol and Carinthia to Slovenia and Croatia. The Via Carinzia offers 162 kilometres of cycling across five daily stages between the Rosental, Lake Klopein and the Lavant Valley. The Carinthian Lake Loop is divided into eight stages. The two routes therefore have different stage structures: five daily stages on the Via Carinzia and eight stages on the Lake Loop. The Karnische Höhenroute runs for 155 kilometres along the border between Carinthia and Italy. If you compare routes by their stated length, you can also consider the Südalpen-Panoramaweg: it stretches for more than 200 kilometres over 17 daily stages.
Lakes and far-reaching views
Lake Weissensee lies at an altitude of 930 metres and is the highest swimming lake in the Alps in Austria. The Wörthersee boat service offers a view of places along the lakeshore, and there is also food and drink on board. If you are planning a trip, it is worth checking the current timetable. The Villacher Alpenstraße offers views of Villach, the Karawanks and the Julian Alps. The lake, boat and road each offer their own perspective on the landscape and its towns.
History and cross-border discoveries
The Bamberger Amthof in Feldkirchen was built in the 12th century. The Amthof Museum focuses on the town’s history, folk culture and architectural history. Castles and palaces are also part of Carinthia’s historic landscape: more than 400 are spread across the region; this figure may vary as an inventory count. Another scale is represented by the UNESCO Global Geopark Karawanken, which brings together nine Carinthian and five Slovenian municipalities.
At the disused tunnels of Petzen at the Mežica mine in Slovenia, you can explore by tunnel biking, canoeing or on a guided tour. In the Geo.Dom, a lounge with a view invites you to immerse yourself in the “NatureGame”. These experiences have different focuses: underground tunnels on the one hand, and a game in the Geo.Dom on the other.
Regional cuisine and culinary experiences
For centuries, Carinthian Alpine-Adriatic cuisine has been shaped by influences from Austria, Italy and Slovenia. A traditional Carinthian yeast pastry is Reindling, filled with sugar, raisins and cinnamon. At the Gurktaler Nudelhaus, visitors make their own Carinthian Kasnudeln, taste them on site and take ten dumplings home. The experience is bookable on request. Slow Food Travel in Carinthia includes workshops and tours with local producers, as well as culinary experiences. You can discover regional cuisine and its producers in different ways: through pastries, cooking together, or workshops and tours.
